Are you convinced that the Saints will be good on defense this year?

We have been among the best in the league on defense every year since 2017.
However, this is the most turnover we have had on the defense since the offseason between the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
This team could turn out like the 2014 team. It had big expectations but fell flat on its face because of the high defensive turnover. The defense was extremely bad on that team.
I think it all hinges on whether the guys we signed to replace our key cogs in our front seven will actually turn out to be worthy replacements.

I feel good about the secondary and starting LB's but the Dline is a big unknown.

If the following happen they will be good.
1. Stay healthy
2. Stay healthy
3. Stay healthy
There’s enough talent in the starting lineup to be a top 10 defense and DA for all his faults can coach defense. I actually think the DL performs better than last year and we see a lot of both Breese and Foskey immediately. I think our 2 free agent DT end up being better players than Onyemata or Tuttle and I think you might see Foskey jump Turner as the primary rotational DE behind Granderson very early. As long as Davis and Werner stay healthy you have no worry at LB even after losing Elliss. Same with Lattimore at corner with Alontae Taylor jumping Adebo officially. Safety might be the weak spot but Mathieu and Maye can hopefully just be average and the D will be good.

I mean the 2014 defense started Corey White and Kasim Edebali so I think we will be better just based off that metric

The secondary is stout. The big turnover on defense was mostly at the tackle position. Onyemata and Tuttle both have been on a downward spiral for a couple of seasons. The run defense is lacking particularly in the middle. They need that big run stuffer. The biggest thing that hurt the defense last year that they can easily fix is in turnovers.
Just the league (AVG.) for turnovers last year was (22.2). The Saints had (14). 7 ints. and 7 rec. fumbles. That difference of 8 turnovers is easily the difference in 2 to 3 more wins. Guess what other defense was worse at recovering fumbles and interceptions. The Raiders. They didn't do too well either.

They will probably be middle of the pack. Davis has been so good for the Saints for so long, his age is catching up with him and I don't think he can be relied on to carry the LB corps this year. Secondary was disappointing last year but on paper they should be better this year now that some of these guys have experience. Lattimore being back against the Eagles was one of the main factors in winning that game, he's truly a beast. DL, who knows? They've invested in that area, lets see if they can stay healthy and become consistent.

I think that a big factor in the Saints favor is the QBs they will face this year. Most are either young, unproven, or average.
With decent health, I think our QB opponents can make our defense look too 10.

I have less faith in the defense than I have in quite some time. I really don't feel like it'll be any better than a middle of the pack unit. I hope I'm wrong.

No.
because I haven't seen them play any games this year yet.

Saints will have a decent defense at worst, not accounting for injuries. Allen knows what he’s doing as a defensive play caller, shame he doesn’t have the humility to stay as one.

I think we can be ok. We’re definitely not going to be close to elite unless all these DL players hit insanely early.

I believe that we play a shite schedule so there is that.
If you are asking me if I think that those stats and trends will travel into the playoffs then no. We have the ability to play our schedule and could end up with 11 wins.
So we could enter the plays giving up 19.5 points a game, less than 125 yards/gm rushing and under 250 passing but that is not going to last against good teams.

We have all pro capable talent at every position except Safety. I am not worried about CB at all, and if Demario and Cam play like they have the last 5 years, we'll be top 10 in the league minimum.
Top 5 status hinges on Safety play and the rest of the D-line. If we get good play from FS, 10 sacks from our other DE, and the DTs hold up, we'll likely win the division.

Feel really good about secondary.
LB’s good, although an injury away from terrible.
DL - It all comes down to them. If they are good ,the D is good. if they suck, the D struggles.

It all depends on how good their FA DL are.If they don`t
have a run stopper in the middle then it wont be better.

I'm more bullish on the prospects for the Saints' D this season than most of the other posters on this thread. The secondary should be elite. This is the best group of corners we've ever had, and I actually think we may see above average safety play. Mathieu and Maye took a while to gel last season due to newness and Maye's injury, but by the end of the season they were playing at a high level. Maye might be suspended for a few games at the beginning of the season pending how his DUI case shakes out, but I think we're going to be very good in the secondary. I actually think the bigger question mark is not the D line but the LBs b/c of lack of depth at LB. If Davis does not regress due to age this season and Werner stays healthy, we'll be fine b/c we don't use a lot of 3 LB sets. Maybe D'Marco Jackson can develop. I expect better D line play than last year. Granted, this is partly b/c we didn't get great production from that unit last season, but it's more because I think we have replaced the players we lost with better talent. The combo of Shepherd, Saunders, and Bresee should more than make up for the loss of Tuttle and Onyemata. Onyemata, in particular, was underwhelming last year. We still have Roach at DT too. Foskey will be a rookie, but how can his production be less than what Davenport's was last year, which was statistically a big nothing burger, even if he did have a few pressures here and there. Yes, Cam is aging, but he will still provide veteran leadership and will probably be around the ball a lot, and Granderson looks to be improving. We had almost no sacks last year that were not due to stunts or blitzes. I expect to see more of our D linemen winning battles and making sacks based on individual talent, which should lead to more turnovers. Despite being statistically good on D last year, we were down on turnovers and impact plays. I expect improvement this season.

The whole reason for Dennis Allen as coach was the "consistency" he would bring, so yeah, the Saints better be good on defense with a defensive-minded head coach.

I'm still in the prove it and make me believe stage.
