He will definitely be voted in as a starter next year, this is what everyone has been waiting for.

There's no upside at all for him to do this.

If he gets extra votes to make the All Star game next year because of this announcement, then there is upside.

I disagree. Yeah, he might not win, but oh well.

I think the upside is the view of him would change from the everyday fan, considering the dunk contest has become an absolute joke and fans really want to see stars back competing in the contest. Zion could be one of the rare ones that isn't a complete pussy about it and worrying about it ruining his image.

It' would be refreshing for somene with Zion's popularity to not worry about this stuff.

I don't really agree with the take also. Or more to the point, while it may be correct that there's no upside, there's no downside either. If Zion doesn't win the dunk contest, quite literally nothing will change. It'll be fine.

So if a guy as popular wants to do it, I'm all for it and glad he's bucking that trend if those dudes being "too cool" to do a dunk contest.

Hey Lebron. Shut up. You ruined the dunk contest with your "i don't want to get embarressed" attitude, starting a trend of top players not participating in the dunk contest.
NO one wants to see Jacob fricking Toppin and Mac Mclung in the dunk contest.
I want to see Zion, Ja Morant, Anthony Edwards, De'Aron Fox, Donovan Mitchell, Paolo, WammerJammer, etc. I don't want to watch a G-League dunk contest.

Yeah, they are supposed to be entertaining the fans. If they swing big and miss people will understand, the fans want to see these world class athletes trying to do extraordinary feats. Don't worry about what the judges score you, just put on a show.

You seem upset. I'd love to see Zion in the dunk contest.

The point remains, there is no upside. If he wins, he was expected to, if he doesn't, he gets clowned on

What about the upside of the fact that now the fans and the media and the NBA itself really wants him to make the All-Star game?? It was a brilliant piece of marketing by Zion and his team (intentional or not).

I feel like, in the immediate aftermath of the all star game, you always have a star come out and say how they would like to do the dunk contest next year... only to not do it when that time ultimately comes. I know Lebron has played that okie doke game a couple times.

Hopefully Zion is different.

It’s why I give Jaylen Brown a ton of credit for actually doing it. Granted it wasn’t the best appearance, but hopefully it will lead to a couple more stars doing it.

Probably doesn't help that he got booed mercilessly because he clearly went into that thinking he could get away with doing some basic in-game dunks.

His health has been the reason he has never done it before

This year i figured he opted out to avoid McDonalds jokes.

Earn some cred this year, stay healthy, and he could have a moment next year for sure.

It wasn't aimed at you.
It irritates me that Lebron watched MJ and Kobe win dunk contests, then decided he was too cool for it.

Everyone would want to watch a Zion/Morant dunk contest. It woudl be the most hyped dunk contest ever if those two were in it.

I don’t blame you. Lebron ruined the dunk contest. He does it and more noteworthy players would participate. The fact Zion and Wemby want to do it though is a good sign. The influence of Lebron may be over.

Lebron got pissed when he didn’t make the All Star game his rookie year and vowed not to do the dunk contest.
