I think he would be incredible on our team. Just not sure how we could tempt the suns to give him up.

I used to want him, but watching him basically quit on the suns and give absolutely zero effort after getting paid has changed that. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole

Hey, what do you guys think about the 3-4th best center in the league? Any interest?

I'm still of the mind that I think a lot of that has to do with Phoenix and the CP experience being a terrible fit for Ayton. That our culture of positive reinforcement and healthy competitive camaraderie would be the ideal situation for Ayton.

but gun to my head would I want to pay the asking price and tie up that money on that hunch? Not really.

But if Griff, and especially Willie, who knows him well, thinks it can work here, and Gayle is willing to go into the luxury, I wouldn't melt.

It’s just a question. At some point we will need to make a move. Can’t keep stacking picks just to fill a G League Roster.

I know we’d love to have that level of talent, but the question is about would you give up the assets to do it?

Jonas, 2 firsts and Herb?

The problem with the center position though is it's really hard for the Pels to upgrade it via trade/FA. To get someone that is an actual upgrade over JV and not just a lateral move that plugs some holes but opens up others, you are going to have to go from JV's $15 million in salary to the next tier of centers like Ayton that are making $30+ million. The Pels just can't afford to have that much money tied up at center when they already have 3 max or near max players.

You also wouldn't want to swap out any of CJ/BI/Zion for a center to make the salary work. Even when CJ ages out you'll want to replace him with another big money guard or wing, not a center.

The draft or picking up a cast off and developing them are the most likely path to giving us a center closer to what we need.

Ayton has been discussed ad nauseam on this board, and as has been said multiple time.

We cannot afford to add a 4th max contract to this roster. There’s a reason no team has 4 max contract players, it stifles your ability to add role players around them.

And that is without even getting into the crippling luxury tax implications that we cannot overcome especially as a small market team.

I’d rather get a center who is a little further down the line but on a more affordable deal (Poetel). SAS have to come down on their price tho.

Unless the role players you need are already on the roster on rookie/bargain deals, an you have a steady reserve of draft picks to continue filling out roles....Which is the pels.

The real hindrance is Gayle's pocketbook....and if you make that leap, is Ayton who you do it for? Not IMO

We can't afford him realistically speaking.

Why would we pay over 30 million for a center that can’t shoot?

Is it the playoff series vs us? Is that why his name constantly comes up here?

He's never been half that player the rest of his career. He's a hesitant offensive player when he's not being fed dunks by CP3 and is an ok but not spectacular defender.

Even playing out of his mind vs us last year, he averaged 20/10 in that series. He was 16/8 in their next series vs Dallas.

He's more popular here than he is with his own fanbase.

PHX has a culture of positive reinforcement and healthy competitive camaraderie. That comes straight from Monty who was Willie's mentor. There are multiple stories of PHX coaches and players pushing Ayton to be better and him not responding or responding negatively. I think our culture is very similar to PHX's and if he isnt responding there, i dont think he would here. He just does not seem to have the drive to be great. He seems perfectly content being above average and getting paid.

what?

We have a maxed out all NBA player
We have a maxed out all star.
We have a $30M+/yr veteran who's playing great.

Everyone else is just a role player. You don't pay role players $35M/yr.

If we can't compete for a title with Zion/BI/CJ, then one or more of those 3 need to go, b/c we have more than enough pieces around them to compete, and we can easily add/swap other role players if needed.
All this talk about adding someone making $30+M, and even $20+M needs to stop, unless you're talking about trading one of our big 3.

Center in the NBA is like RB in the NFL, unless you have a star(Jokic, Embiid, etc.) You're better off going with a center by committee approach. That way you can play multiple styles and not commit a ton of money to one guy at that position

Monty is a great guy, CP3 has a rep as a petty tyrant and hardass culture setter that demands excellence and will not hold back admonishing you for failing to live up to that. And reports have been out there about those frictions.

And I wholeheartedly do not agree the two cultures are that similar. That doesn't mean PHX's is bad, but CP3 and Booker is not out there calling up Ayton to help him get in practice reps and playing positive mentor the way BI was for Jose/Trey/Herb.

Theres a reason the Pels have/are a lot of fans second favorite team these days, and it comes from the vibes and positive culture this team has built. And you see that every game with the way everyone pulls for everyone else, guys go out of their way to lift each other up, and competition is kept healthy and family-like.

Paul seems like an a-hole imo. I'm not sure how popular he is in the league outside of his butt buddy banana sling pals.

His toxic reputation is much more deserved than Kyrie's, which is why Phoenix was willing to add a first rounder to trade him for 3 months of Kyrie.
