Mason has a pretty good twitter thread going on some of the problems with the CJ/BI/Herb/JV lineup this season that was so good last season.

The whole thread is here LINK but to sum up, to recapture the magic of last year the team needs to play through JV more and lean on CJ/BI mid range jumpers less. Another point that a lot of people have been screaming for months is stop using non shooters as spacers. Get them more involved in the action to minimize their offensive limitations.

quote:

Spacing against a 2-3 zone

His comment on this image was "Wonder what this would look like if CJ and Naji switched places"

You beat zones with ball and player movement until you find the gaps, not having everyone, including your 2 biggest threats, bunched up together shrinking the floor for the defense.

I think the biggest need of the offseason isn't a player, but a top offensive coordinator. The Pels are beating themselves as much or more than they are getting beaten since Zion went down.

Comments like this are silly.

We don't know what the market will look like in 3 months. A lot changes in the offseason, as we have all seen. Needs and wants can drastically change and players you think are untouchable now suddenly become gettable.

Like I said, I think Griff is going to be reluctant to give up CJ, so a lot of this is all moot. But CJ is a vet borderline all star that can fit on most teams that rehabilitated his image and injury perception in the last season and a half. If the Pels get the itch to make that big move, it will likely have to involve CJ just from a numbers game.

But since the probability is low, that is why my initial answer focused on reorganizing our depth with guys that fill holes and Willie will actually play: Bruce Brown, Grant Williams, Naz Reid, Nick Richards, Malik Beasley, Seth Curry, Lonnie Walker, Alec Burks.

They shouldn't be. As frustrating as the mental mistakes and lackadaisical defense can be, they really do have skills that are an excellent compliment to Zion.

Do they, though?

I don't think anyone should be offlimits this offseason.

This is a collapse worthy of major changes.

Yes and no. Both can shoot the 3 very well. But Larry's comments on their focus on the mid range being one of the problems with the offense has stuck in my head. He's not wrong, they do seem to prefer the fall away from the double team mid range shot to an open 3. And both are pretty good at it, but I think we'd get more value out of them if the offense was working better to get them more C&S 3s than asking them to generate hard 2s.

What’s BI and CJs percentages from midrange this season

Not sure if this is a Pels number or BI and CJ number.

quote:

Mason Ginsberg @MasonGinsberg 3h

And get this - they're GOOD from mid-range when compared to the rest of the NBA! They're shooting 46.3% from mid-range (82nd %ile).

But if that doesn't painfully represent the issue then I'm not sure what does.

Mid-range shots have to be a viable threat, not a focal point.

What’s BI and CJs percentages from midrange this season

BI:

49% from 10-16 feet
40% from 16-3pt

CJ:

53% from 10-16 feet
35% from 16-3pt

The issue is probably less those percentages, and more so the number of shots they take from that range.

For BI, 47.2% of his shots come from 10 feet out to the 3pt line. CJ not nearly as bad at 28.6% of his shots coming from the same distance.

The BI 47.2% is just not good. There is absolutely a value to those shots and being able to hit them, but you can get that shot at any time, so you should try to get a better shot and really only take those late in the shot clock as that is when you see that value come through.

Griff likely knew Zion’s re injury tanked the season. No major moves at the deadline and weird rotations are sealing the direction. A coherent rotation might have salvaged a play in but choice may be to get a lottery pick and combine with assets to fix roster construction.

I don’t think you have to move Val or CJ, but would strongly consider them coming off the bench. A solid frontcourt big who can move their feet and also extend to the 3 is who I’d put chips in for. An aggressive point who controls tempo, shoots, defends and drives would also be on the list. It’s obvious that You have to relieve some primary ball handling duties from BI and Zion for sustainability.

Question is with proper development do the Pels have the answer on the roster? A developed version of TM3, Dyson, and Hayes really would solve a lot of problems instead of having to go to market. Of course, you also have to acquire another deadeye shooter, particularly a movement shooter.

The problem is as constructed and the always fun "when healthy" this team is built to win now. May not be a perfect team yet, but definitely a team you're trying to max out winning now. We don't have any one on our roster now that you can say we should start over CJ and move CJ to the bench, and that would make us better right now. It surely isn't Dyson at this time, so I don't know who that guy would be?

You have to find that guy, be able to afford that guy, and have that guy agree to come here...who is that guy?

Some of the answers, but not all.

Hayes is 100% gone at end of year, and yes, Dyson/Trey will solve a shite ton of questions if they pan out as expected. I think we've already hit on Trey as a 17th pick. The hope for him is that he can turn into a max level good player, but he'll always be a solid role player already as is. Dyson has a looooong ways to go but excited about the potential. He's just not really ready for playoff level rotation minutes at this time on the offensive side of the ball, which is fine.

I can buy that, my contention is the individual development of players, particularly the physical aspect of the game. Curious on your thoughts of how the team would have fared with 10-15lbs on TM3, Herb, and Jaxson. i believe it would have gone a long way into helping Pels play the way Coach Green envisions.

I’m not as sure as I was before the trade deadline.

Jax has his flaws, but he has traditional length and is a very good athlete, which the Pels don’t otherwise have inside. If the Pels are still reluctant to trade for a true upgrade at the 4/5 (Jax and JV give you $25mm), then I would be inclined to keep Jax and try to continue developing.

It all depends on whether 1) you think it will eventually click, and 2) you can keep him cheap enough on a team friendly deal.

I just don't know that he's shown us he'll get it. You never hear people talking about how hard he works. The main reason to have any hope at all is there have been quite a few bigs, including other knuckleheads, that put it together after 24-25. History of the league is sadly more reason to have hope than anything Jaxson has shown us.

I guess I’m one of the few that still thinks this team can be a legit contender as constricted but we have to be healthy or this doesn’t work. Everyone knows their roles on our team and they are a tight unit that’s easy to see in how they interact. Before we go blowing it up I would like to see them okay together all healthy to see what they really have. I know Jonas has his limitations but he is also the big guy every team needs to have and he does that well. He’s tough and has a solid offensive game to him but there are going to be times where Larry is the guy playing at the end when it matters just because he’s a better defender and faster. It’s hard to call this lineup a failure just look at the talent. Get this rotation healthy and on the court at the same time and I know they will produce better results.

PG: CJ/Jose/Dyson
SG: Herb/Richardson
SF: BI/Naji
PF: Zion/Trey
C: JV/Larry

Yeah, I just don't see it. Not enough shooters surrounding Zion and no rim protection. Issues remain even with a healthy Zion, he's just so damn good it masks those.

I guess if I were to look at it optimistically, Zion proved to be a top ten player IF IF IF healthy. You can win a Championship with him as your focal point which I was unsure of before this season and never felt during the AD years, even when he was healthy.

Exactly. The biggest problem is that the two most efficient shots are at the basket and beyond the 3. One of those we can’t make and one we can’t defend. It’s like tying one arm behind your back. Furthermore, we rebound at a terrible rate giving teams second chances.

Zion is so efficient that it didn’t even matter… But you saw it even when Zion was healthy. If a team limited his efficiency even slightly, the offense imploded. No one else can generate efficient offense if Zion is bottled up. That has to be fixed.
