Same ole 35 inch biceps, 55 inch waist and 290 pounds physique.

This is more of the same. Not anything to get overly hyped about imo. Coin flip at best if he stays healthy with that frame.

He looks in great shape...but I agree that it's the wrong body for him.

It's better than being fat though. I think given where things were, you'd be crazy to complain about this.

Is that why he had abs in college? Was the fat just stored in his arse or was he just in shape?

When people have disproportionate fat in their midsection it isn’t because they are in prime shape and “that’s just how they are built”. If Zion was 6-7% body fat I promise he wouldn’t have a pudgy midsection.

There is no chance he is single digits, but a lifetime of poor diet and stress may cause someone to hold weight in their gut.

You can’t target where you lose weight, but your body may be inclined to hold on to fat in certain areas. That one pic where his shirt it tight, you can see the outline of upper abs, and the bottom of his belly showing fat.

He very well may hold fat there more than other places, but the dude is not in single digit fat percentage, no way.

This is just another round in the ongoing debate about Zion's make up.

He looks pretty jacked and apparently is working out steadily at the Pels facility.

What I and others have argued is that, even if he is "in shape," he can't play an NBA season at 280+ pounds. Period. He can get as yoked up as he wants, but that much weight over the course of a season, given the way he plays, will break down his lower body for sure.

I don't want to see him get more jacked. I want to see him to lean down, lose some muscle, up the cardio and flexibility play somewhere around 250-260.

There is no indication to date that Zion's camp agrees with that. In fact, they seem committed to Zion's brand being that he's the biggest, strongest force in the league.

And he can be. For about 40 games...

The above pic is exactly what I was talking about and have been saying. This myth of "Duke Zion" is something that just isn't true. He was a big guy in high school, he was a big guy at Duke. It is what makes him who he is as a player.

The most overlooked factor in all of this is the new training staff. I have brought it up many times, but Zion lost confidence (with good reason) in Nelson early in his career. I believe this was a big factor in him not doing what he needed in his rehabs. In order for this to work, we need Zion to be in the best possible shape to begin the season and then have 100% trust in the new training staff to rehab if an injury occurs. The fact that he is at the facility training this summer is a huge step in the right direction.

His body can hold up if they are doing it right. He can be that big and still play 70 games, but he will need to really concentrate on lower extremity work.

One thing in the “he’s in shape camp”. Zoom in on his bicep. See that line? That’s REALLY hard to get unless you are shedding a lot of fat. When I get that line I know I’m really close.

How do you figure?

Obviously you are well versed in training. Is it universal?

I believe there is very specific sport training, plus optimal physiques and builds particular to each sport. For instance, if a guy wanted to run a marathon at 230lbs. Wouldn't you steer him to lose as much extra weight as possible, so he is carrying less?

Would the same philosophy apply to basketball? Does he really need more muscle or bulk?

"Big" sure, but he wasn't fat or never thought of as overweight or fat or out of shape back then.

Just saying that there is no way to compare (as that Duke photo above in his jersey looks much different than the shirtless photo you posted.

He wasn't rocking a six pack in the pic from Duke . I just don't understand why some people are hoping he loses 30lbs from his playing weight last year. His issue has been he hasn't been in the best shape to start and especially after he gets injured. I offered a reason as to why I think that happened and why I think it will be better. The guy is in shape and working hard. He looks really good. I don't think anyone can look at that first pic in the OP and say the guy isn't in shape.

I 100% disagree….that is a 300lb man in that picture. Now having said that, it’s definitely not the worst he’s looked, he just looks a little too jacked and a little too thick.

I hope those photos are real. That's not too jacked imo, that's David Robinson jacked.

It’s really about frame. His frame will allow it. He has a HUGE frame. I am a short fricker, but I have a very wide frame. It’s why I can be 190lbs and have a 6 pack. My frame allows me to pack on muscle. That’s his frame at 6’6.

They will need to really concentrate on lower extremity strength training in order to allow him to keep his joints healthy. My shoulder was shot. Changing how I strengthened the muscles around it allowed me to alleviate the additional stress on the joint. If his diet is right and he hits the lower body hard, that muscle will assist the tendons and alleviate stress from the joints.

Zion could do it if he had the right team and the discipline. The additional strength would preserve the explosiveness. Under the right training, quickness would not be hindered much, if at all.

If he’s dumb, he could get rocked up and be useless on the court.
