WRT height, I think Yao would have had a much longer and better career if he wasn’t shanghaied (no pun intended) into being on the Chinese national team for every big competition.

Big guys like that take a lot of wear on their lower bodies. Him doing an 82 game regular season, playoffs, and one or more international competitions every year caused a ton of stress fractures and other issues.

It isn’t necessarily a career killer but minutes limits and a Kawhi-like regiment of games they are held out of are likely necessary to get the most out of them.

My Spurs prediction is based on current rosters, and I would probably put UTA in that position if they trade Mitchell. OKC is not going to be bottom three this year, in my opinion. As rosters currently stand, I think that Houston is the Spurs' strongest rival for the worst in the West.

But, there are always injuries.

EDIT: After the Spurs and the Thunder, I actually think that the 3rd-worst team in the West is the Lakers.

Posted it here, but I feel pretty good about this tiering based on where we are today

LINK

I think bottom five will be: SAS, HOU, OKC, SAC from worst to least bad in that order. Utah being the wild card with Mitchell.

Think Lakers and a lesser extent Portland are high variance teams depending on health and how their stars rebound.

IMO, the only one of those teams actively trying to win is SAC

I think (maybe) that OKC is done tanking. If they like the guys they have that is

they might be too good to tank anyway if they don’t shackle SGA and giddey

National team did him no favors for sure, but really, his overall career is about how every +7'2" player has gone(health wise, Ming was a beast of a player when healthy though).

The number of guys that have had relatively healthy, long careers, that lived up to the hype with that stature is basically 0

Makes me incredibly skeptical of VW.

Yao was soooo good.

He had the issue where he wasn't just tall but he was legit big, just a solid body type.

He never really had a chance for a long career.

No. Not at all. But they don't know how to tank without sitting everyone. Pop pushes and develops. They tend to overachieve.

Plus I like their talent and depth especially if they do not trade away the vets (Richardson Collins and McDermott). They are missing a lead guard. But I think they are a 28-30 win club right now without a fire sale. That isn't bad enough for bottom 3, maybe not for bottom 5. I know they want to lose. Pop may not let them. He probably needs to either leave or go back to the front office..

List the teams that you think are worse than the Spurs.

As of now, Hornets Pacers Rockets possibly the Thunder and Magic. I expect the Jazz Lakers and Wiz to potentially take big falls this season too.

he won’t let them lay down and they’ll play hard but they will absolutely try to get the #1 pick. Those two things are not exclusive

they may not be the worst team on the floor (debatable) but they’ll endeavor to have the worst record

I think the Pacers will be better this year. Lakers can hardly take a big fall, they were the 8th worst team last season.

OKC is definitely done tanking. They already have tons of young prospects to develop, and they still have tons of future picks, including 13 first-round picks in the next five years. They don't need to tank for more high picks, because they can trade up if they want to -- and that's if some of the picks they have from other teams don't end up high. Because, right now, owning the Rockets and Jazz picks in 2024 looks really good.

I don't know what we're talking about in regards to Spurs recent draft history, that list is pretty impressive. Of course they don't have any All-Stars (aside from the guy they just traded), the average of those picks is 21st. That's an impressive hit rate for that late in the draft.

Utah if they trade Mitchell is the only one out of the group that should finish below SA IMO.

Orlando has a solid enough unit and Paolo will likely be rookie of the year

Char still has Lamelo and Rozier which is better than anything on the Spurs

Was is a mess overall, but they still have Beal and Porzingas plus a few decent prospects.

This is the thing about all those bottom 10 teams, they lose their primary player and they are done. Injuries are going to happen and a few teams are going to slide way under expectations. It is a guessing game who those teams are going to be and why it's almost impossible to predict. Plus there is a ton of movement still to come..
