Portland made the WCF once with Lillard and Dame and went to the playoffs every year. I'm sure once they made the playoffs a few times the Knick fans would start dreaming bigger, but a regular playoff team that can make the ECF would be such a huge improvement over where they are now.
Unless someone is arguing they should tank for Wembeyomama, holding onto assets hoping to set up a championship foundation vs. cashing them in for Mitchell to become Portland of the East, Portland of the East seems like an actual, achievable goal.

Nope. Nothing from us to date that the Jazz want eight.
@Tjonesonthenba and I discussed his reporting about Utah wanting six firsts and I added that “one source” told me it was seven. Neither of us suggested that the Jazz asked for eight, which is the maximum New York can trade.

Mitchell has been playing with Conley (6'0) for years and thrived. So it has worked for the Jazz a long time. No reason it couldn't work for the Knicks.
Mitchell was listed at 6'3 for a long time till they did the official heights/weights. Then he dropped to 6'1 (w/o shoes). He does have a 6'10 wingspan and insane hops. Plus he is built almost like a LB at close to 220. Incredible athlete. That doesn't age well though and he is going to have to really work to keep it up..

In a few years, all the major market teams will be sitting out the draft for a decade.

And the process will continue as the Pels and others trade off guys they no longer want to pay for future picks.

Nothing official yet but apparently Utah radio stations are leaking that Mitchell deal has been reached and will be announced soon.
Could be rumor monger if bullshite but I see a team like the Knicks blinking and doing a severe overpay.

the more I think about it the less risky I think it is for the Knicks. Mitchell is 25
in two years they’d have Brunson, RJ and Mitchell with Randle off the books and picks left to trade. DM would be in his prime and RJ nearing it

But Mitchell was the #1 dude on a much better Utah team, even nabbed a #1 seed and they topped out at round 2 of the playoffs.
This is a team who I don't see getting past round 1 with round 2 being their absolute ceiling. Again, better than the last 2 decades, but I wouldn't be THAT excited about giving up the entire future for that.

Mitchell isn’t directly the issue IMHO.
It is that the Knicks have a bunch of money promised to a black hole in Randle and a small guard in Brunson and are now going to shoot their load, asset wise, on an offensively talented small guard who doesn’t defend.
It likely gets them into the playoffs but also likely cripples them for a decade.

Utah's issue is come playoff time, their weakest links on defense was at the 3 and 4. Gobert couldn't hide them defensively against elite wings, and he became a detriment offensively.
A trip of Brunson, Mitchell, and Barrett has potential

was the rumors tied to the Knicks getting him?
You know, i don't know what Washington is doing. They give Beal the extension, but they've done nothing to give him a true 2nd running mate with him.
They could throw Johnny Davis, Deni, Kispert, Rui, Kuzma and 25/27/29 1sts with swaps and then see what a Beal/Mitchell/Porzingis trio can do.

assuming 5 picks (3 from others, 2 from knicks) plus salary filler goes out, in two years they would be off randle with multiple of their own picks to trade and could actually create max room for a FA
Posted on 7/21/22 at 6:12 pm to cgrand
Assumption had been 6+ picks and the Jazz may insist on swaps for some years because a lot of those picks the Knicks got from OKC are lottery protected.
Posted on 7/21/22 at 6:24 pm to teke184
maybe so but who are the knicks bidding against?
5 picks even with 3 protected is a damn good offer for a one-way player

Have you paid attention to the Knicks over the last 20 years? Dolan is bidding against himself for the guy he really wants.

I think Miami wants to do something, they just don't have the assets to really compete.
Kyle Lowry isn't what they expected, and while i think they love Herro, they want to upgrade Herro and get back an all-star/all-nba type player.
I still say Washington should be trying to get Donovan Mitchell. If they aren't going to try to get someone like that, then Beal is going to be up for trade next offseason b/c there's no reason for him to be on that team rotting away.
i also think a dark horse team that's been quiet, but one that probably needs to make a move is Memphis. Wouldn't surprise me if they made a big time trade like for Mitchell out of nowhere.

I think it's the Knicks all the way. Who are they bidding against? The same people the Lakers were with AD, there's nothing forcing the Jazz to make a trade now, you have to pay the price they want to make a trade happen. The Knicks can hold onto a few extra draft picks that will never turn into a player as good as Mitchell, or they can go all in and maybe have the first respectable Knicks team since the Ewing era ended.

Yeah good luck with that last one.
Dolan and his GMs tend to both overpay in trades for players they desperately want as well as throw big money at shite FAs out of proportion with their production.
Last major FA I remember them getting was Amare Stoudemire and the issue there was that his knees were fricked and the Knicks couldn’t get the contract insured, meaning that they were left holding the bag if he had any major injuries.

Dillon Brooks, JJJ, Santi Aldama, and Multiple 1sts for Mitchell and Vanderbilt is a good trade for both sides IMO
