I feel the same way as does Van Gundy in reference to Ted Cruz’s fan base. So that doesn’t bother me in the least form. His political views aligning with mine also has absolutely no bearing on whether he brings value to the Pelicans. Which he absolutely does and I hope he is the hire.

Stan Van Gundy will be demanding of his young stars while allowing them to reach their peaks, in a structured basketball program that understands how to win basketball games. His prowess to develop big men is very intriguing as well, with respects not just going to Zion but I think more to Jaxson Hayes and to a lesser extent Jahlil Okafor.

I’m not sure how invested the Pelicans are into the long term success of Jahlil but if he sticks around Van Gundy may finally help realize his final form.

Hayes should be stepping into the starting lineup this year based on his draft position in a normal situation. I’m not sure any team that rosters Zion Williamson can be considered normal. At this point in the off-season I’m not expecting him to assume the starting role just yet but would expect Van Gundy to expedite his development throughout next season and into the playoffs.

A Stan Van Gundy hire shows a determination to hire and develop the best. I also think he’s a cliche coach to lead generational talent(s). Geaux Pels!!!

I would imagine that if Stan were hired his time to tweet would be significantly less and he'd save it for the important stuff, not replying to a reply to make a joke. I also think he's been especially active because it's election season and he's unemployed. Most of his political tweets have been about local politicians he's personally supporting in Florida.

I have never paid attention to Gundy or his stances before this thread. So I went and looked at his Twitter. Yeah, the guy is a far left loon. He has a dozen tweets, not retweets, in the past 24 hours, bashing Trump, supporting Unions, abortion rights, questioning Barrett's ethics.. He isn't a casual political observer. Especially when he has over 100k followers.

Not sure how Ownership, strict Catholics, will like his views or how militant he is. It will alienate a lot of fans. Coaches are supposed to be obsessed with coaching and winning. People don't care about off the cuff remarks or superficially supporting player's issues. This dude goes way beyond all of that..

It really doesn’t bother me at all and I don’t align with him politically.

I want him to help win basketball games, I’m not trying to be his best friend.

ETA: being offended by his political views means that you give his views some sort of importance. It’s the same with the athletes, why would you care what their political views are? That isn’t their area of expertise, who gives a shite if they hold stupid opinions. I don’t know if you’ve realized this yet, but most people are really stupid

And he's doing that on his own time. He isn't representing the NBA or any team. He's just an ordinary citizen at this point. If he were to go this heavy with political stuff as a coach, well then that's a different story.

You can have opinions about China and Hong Kong, but expressing them in an official role carries consequences.

Are you under the impression that he is unemployed? His twitter history goes back years. He has openly been critical and making these types of statements for years. He is an analyst for NBA TV and TNT. That makes him a spokesman for the NBA.

I cherry picked this statement by him in 2016..

“I don't think anybody can deny this guy is openly and brazenly racist and misogynistic,” Van Gundy said. “We have just thrown a good part of our population under the bus, and I have problems with thinking this is where we are as a country.”

So, he isn't going to back down or give it a rest. Does it matter?

So I guess every SVG thread is going to turn into a conservative melt and cancel fest huh?

If he’s not announced tomorrow, I don’t think he’s the guy

I thought conservatives didn’t like cancel culture? i guess it’s negotiable, well whatever. I really don’t mind what his politics are, i’m sure the players would relate to someone who has there own political beliefs. But shite why is this a topic, seems like in the last four years politics have taken over ever single topic, it’s so damn tiresome!

We reportedly have two interviews this week. though. Whoever the guy is, I expect it will be mid week at earliest before we hear anything. With the very real possibility it will be next week.

Griffin is a consummate professional, no way I see him not honoring his commitments and at least giving his finalists a fair shake. Not to mention TigerAtl makes a very good point, some of those interviewees may be potential lead assistants, you absolutely want to do right by them and have the reputation of doing right by people.

I mean just imagine if one of those finalists is Will Weaver? A guy living in Australia, taking time to come to America, will have to quarantine back in Australia when he returns. And Griffin would just tell him to essentially frick off and not interview him after setting a commitment? It’s not just unprofessional it would be the height of dickishness.
