Offseason thread:

With the Saints getting Dome renovations and 10 years added to their lease, I’m wondering when Gayle and the state will sit down and talk about the Pelicans, and if a new arena would be part of those conversations. If so, what appetite would there be from the legislature to fund a replacement for what is now one of the oldest and least developed arenas in the NBA?

New Arena and new Stadium may never happen in our lifetimes.

I do think we will see some major renovations to the Arena though. The exterior is legitimately ugly.

We don't need a new arena, only upgrades and a facelift. Same as the Dome

better than it was though
when it opened it looked like a prison shower

a new arena is a non starter...the complex of the blender and the dome is set in stone and a bunch of money is being spent to re develop the area around them. What you see is what you get, now and forever. they would have to raze one of the buildings and play elsewhere for two years and ain’t nobody got time for that

there’s nothing wrong with either the blender or the dome that some TLC can’t fix

I think there are many renovations coming the next few years for the arena and some for the superdome. It would cost too much and take a lot of work to start from scratch considering the locations. I feel like a lot of problems with the arena are based off entertainment. The concessions aren't great and it seems the music/ hype has not been very good. The inside of the dome isnt amazing but the entertainment is great and the music/ atmosphere is still fantastic with their shite speakers.

I think that’s fine for the Dome but I just don’t see if with SKC

I hate the name, Smoothie King Center.

It gets laughed at nationally often, most recently during the drawn-out AD bs ("Where do you think AD would choose to play if he could: Madison Square Garden or The Smoothie King Whatever?")

If it had to be a local sponsor, Tabasco, Dixie or Abita Brewery offers a bit more bite than Smoothie King.

Why? The reason teams build new stadiums/arenas isn't to give the fans a shiny new building they'll think is pretty. It's typically because the older bones don't properly support more lucrative features that are a lot easier to sell in bigger cities with a large corporate base.

Maybe if the Zion era is wildly successful the team will feel the SKC is what's keeping it from making more money, but with where the team and the fan base is at now, the product on the court is what's keeping the team from making more money.

It will be interesting to see how the Benson Empire handles negotiations with the state now. Griffin is selling the "Steward of a community asset" role hard for Mrs. Benson. When Tom Benson did his shake downs and threatened to move the team, you knew he wanted the money more than he wanted to move, but you also thought he might actually move the team.

The stances Mrs. Benson has taken with the Pels really reduce her leverage. But they may not need as much leverage. Since they changed "inducements" from the state to rent from the state, maybe all they need to do is raise the rent instead of putting on a dog an pony show justifying a shake down.

SKC is fine and the blender nickname is cool

I don't see anything wrong with the SKC structurally that would demand a new one. It has been well kept up and renovations and upgrades would be sufficient enough. Yes, the exterior is ugly, but it can easily be upgraded. We don't need to tear it all down.

I think there could be upgrades to the interior.
I actually think the exterior is okay, unless you just want to add some extra- fancy facade.

I don’t see a brand new arena anytime soon in the cards. Perhaps come interior upgrades and a few amenities.

I’m actually okay with the overall look outside.
It doesn’t need a lot of extra “flash”, imo.

I’ve grown to deal with the name, I like it better than some generic bs like 1st NTional Bank Arena, etc. Nothing would be like M. S. G.

Architecturally it’s pretty fricking ugly(though tbf there are few genuinely cool looking nba stadiums), but the interior bones are solid enough to get by for a good while with consistent upkeep and renovation.

It’s not anything great there either, but it serves its purpose.

Do people really care that much if the exterior is ugly? I was just in Toronto this past week for a convention, and there are parts of Scotiabank Arena that look like an abandoned warehouse. I honestly think that the attitude of most people in Toronto would be: "Won the chip -- don't care."

But if people think that renovations are necessary, there'll be plenty of money for that after Zion leads us to the promised land. It ain't happening until then.

I think we should look to Everybody Rides Used Car Sales in Hammond to sponsor arena renovations. Then they can rename it the “Everybody Rides Arena.”

THEN...

He forced his way to the Staples Center.... Because young black millionaires love office products.

I actually think the half that faces the superdome is pretty nice looking. It’s the interstate side thats kinda bare and ugly, but they could put a big banner of Jrue and Zion or something and fix that pretty quick.

As for the inside, I always thought the lower level concourses and clubs we’re pretty nice..? Like I never walk around and feel “wow this is outdated”.
