Keep in mind I think money is a big driver here too. This team has been relatively cheap and for 2 years I dont think they will toe the tax line. Griffin may not pull the trigger but again wouldnt surpise me if ownership nudged him as well. Again getting Scoot is also the cheaper option.

Given the past two years, the questions asked in the front office have to be “How soon can we compete?” and “How good will we be if we replace Zion with someone who can get on the court?”
Zion playing has us looking like world beaters. But he can’t stay on the court.
About 25% of the salary cap tied up in someone who only plays about 25% of the games isn’t great value no matter how good he is when he plays.

Sounds like you might know something but it’s still not decided yet.

I dont know anything but lets go by the financial history of this franchise. Never gone into tax, always makes moves for salary purpose(see the devonte trade), the pelicans arent big spenders and honestly have never been. I highly doubt ownership would be happy to be close to the tax next 2 years for a team thats not healthy and with improved western conference probably not a title contender. If you’re not a title contenders and have health issues- why not just go cheaper option and get the guy your scouts want.

Still all kind of boils down to which future the front office views as being more successful. I fully believe that Gayle would be open to going into the tax if the front office thinks that roster construction will compete for a title.

Gayle pays a lot of money out of her own pocket to restructure contracts for the Saints...I don't think it's a foregone conclusion she wouldn't pay the tax for a contender. But I do think we need to win a playoff series (at minimum) first.

I think Gayle will only go into tax if the season before we lose in game 7 of west conf finals. I highly doubt with health issues and lack of experience this team will do that in 2 years. And I doubt Gayle will want to be close to the tax unless the pelicans are competing on that level.

And to me thats a part of the problem- with the new CBA you basically have a 2 year window with this group before going into the tax. Even if we’re healthy all these championships teams tell us you need playoff experience before actually winning it all. We wont magically win a title in 2 years or be that close to one.

The CBA changes with regards to repeater tax and the second apron make it that much more of an issue not to start paying tax unless we are on the cusp of winning it all.
Besides the money itself, losing all those exceptions to sign players and not being able to get buyout players hurts because we aren’t the Lakers or Knicks who can leverage location into getting players on the cheap.

Exactly. which all brings me back to my original point of why I think Griffin will try his hardest to push this trade through. Next year’s draft is utter garbage. The only way they will get a cheap franchise type player is through this draft and with Scoot.

Oh for sure, I'm not arguing whether or not we will be in that position come the end of next season if the team stays together. I just mean that the decisions made today will still be predicated on how confident, or unconfident, we are of Zion's future outlook. If the team gels and makes a deep run, then I think Gayle would be open to paying the tax; otherwise I can't see her wanting to pay it either. We're on the same page here. Money is definitely a part of the equation for future plans

I think the scenario where Scoot is a Blazer, and Dame is traded elsewhere is much more likely than Scoot is a Pelican and Zion is traded elsewhere

Honestly all on portland. Portland fans will tell you the exact opposite. At this point who knows whats going. Smoke everywhere lol

Think someone might’ve already mentioned this in a thread, but here is the link that shows the Zion tweet Dame liked.
The original tweet was from the NBA Central Account and it was quoting the Bill Simmons podcast “The Zion thing is a real real real subplot. I had somebody tell me yesterday, that I trust, that he will not be on the Pelicans, by Thursday.”
Some random underneath commented the following: “Get him to the Blazers.” Dame liked this comment.

You know whats annoying if your a Blazers fromt office guy. Not only do you have to deal with the team your negotiating with but also Dame lol. If your a GM, thats a real headache. Honestly whats best for the franchise is probably trade Dame and draft Scoot. But not easy with the fans love of Dame and his loyalty.

The fact Zion randomly went to Portland to rehab now this is really interesting.

Blazers FO guys answer to Jody Allen until she is forced to sell the team, which she will see no money from.
I honestly think she will push for them to burn it to the ground by going for Zion or other stars instead of Scoot because it isn’t her money.

Yeah such a weird dynamic honestly with her. Im assuming she gets paid to be the administrator of the estate though. I wonder how much.

I just want to go on the record that trading Zion would be a COLOSSAL mistake, one that we would second guess year after year. I’m not trading him for anything short of Doncic. Run it back
