Ingram isn’t even a bad defender. Whoever is the backup defender on the bench if it’s Hart or Thornwell will be going against their back up SF. Which shouldn’t matter much honestly. There aren’t many offensive SFs that can take over a game.

Exactly what Kenrich brought to the table.
Gonna miss Kenny Hustle

They don’t, which is why it’s wise to prioritize trades targeting them or drafting and developing those types of players. Since as the Pels should have learned by now after nearly a decade of this problem, they get gobbled up and overpaid in free agency. Harrison Barnes is probably 50 million dollars richer than his production warrants, but he was an open market 3 that can guard up and down and match up with the best small forwards.
People were giving Atlanta shite but suddenly they have a roster rich with 2/3, 3/4, and 4/3 players.
Not saying I outright regret Hayes, but if you asked me today if I would accept a Hayes for Reddish swap I wouldn’t hesitate.

So the conclusion you drew from the difficulty in guarding top 5 players is that you should not worry about matching up with them?
Not sure that’s how it works.
I don’t think it matters this season, I think you put Ingram out there and he takes his lumps. We don’t have a great way to get a 3&D wing that’ll be good enough on offense to make his defense relevant. Maybe we’ll get a guy like that in the future, but I don’t think it’s a major concern right now.
I think people get caught up in the “formula” to win, as if there is only one way to build a team, and that certain player types are “needed”. There’s more than one way to skin a cat, and I think this team can create a solid defensive foundation with the pieces they already have (using a new defensive scheme of course).

I agree I would’ve went reddish and Clarke over Hayes and NAW.

Yeah I mean I definitely agree there. This isn’t really a make or break year and we have enough draft assets to hopefully pick up a few more lottery or late first prospects to develop, and hopefully one or two of them can be the 3 and D SF archetype.

You forgot Herro & PJ Washington & every other player that you know if better now

Next year is filled with forward and center prospects compared to this year.

Honestly I wanted Rui Hachimura or Coby White. Hayes is too raw for me to draft at 8. Can we really develop him?

Sons, I am pumped about this Gabriel signing

That’s kind of the point. Rui & Clarke were older prospects. They are as old as guys like ball & Ingram
Hayes’ window for development is much larger & yes I think they can develop him into a rotation guy

Wenyen is a 6'9" Forward that played with Sac and Portland last year. He hasn't done much.
So you didn’t watch the playoffs? He looked pretty good.

Yeah I remember him from the playoffs. He was pretty good. I think he’s a good gamble to see if he can crack the lineup and develop into a good rotational player. I think both guys and Hernangomez are great developmental guys to see if can develop into key rotational players.

Everyone is clamoring for a defensive small forward, without saying who Ingram, who will get a ton of minutes, will then be guarding.
You don't want him on a generally quicker SG, nor a generally bigger PF.
He's going to be guarding those guys the majority of the time, for good or bad.
Hart has enough energy to come in and fight with those guys, and Gabriel has the size and athleticism to do it too. He basically is our "defensive wing" everyone seems to be clamoring for.

You don’t understand wanting to have anyone on the roster that can even remotely guard the best players?
Yeah but then you are taking one of our better 2 players in Zion or Ingram off the floor just to play defense.
Bottom line is the have to get better and we have to have better team defense, which we do simply from the fact that Gentry is gone.
Any defensive wing was going to get very limited minutes anyway. Hart can hold up enough, and Gabriel can easily fill that limited minutes role.

Portland people seem to really like him and claim when he played in the bubble he played good Defense
Watch Game 1 vs LAL in the playoffs. He had AD rattled all night. They called some tick tacky fouls on him cuz AD couldn’t hit shite. Low ceiling player but could develop into a nice rotation guy for 15-20 minutes per night if he can hit corner 3s and stay out of foul trouble.

I think this circles back to one of the season long questions which will be Lonzo. As there is certainly a scenario he blossoms into a very solid 1 through 3 defender. But also one where continues to struggle
Because I think something missing a bit is that both the past regime and Ingram himself has expressed a desire for him to play more of a two role offensively and being more of a 2/3 defender as opposed to the 3/4 defender he has been stuck as.
Which I don’t exactly disagree. And while I’ve very much talked myself into the potential of a guy like Kira, you can imagine an ideal roster around Kira, Zion, and Ingram including a 3/4 style 3 and D defender in the mold of how Okoro, Vassell, Nesmith, or Reddish last year project out. Having that balanced mix of shooting, length, size, and explosiveness. Someone to pair with Ingram where both guys can basically comfortably switch onto 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s, but the 3 and D guy can help alleviate the pressure from Ingram by taking the more draining and difficult match ups.
If you keep Lonzo, and at the 2 defensively, the way I see it is that means Ingram will need to step up defensively and any 3 and D guy you get will just be doing bench duty and situational match ups

I just think that the defense is going to get a lot better with better coaching. Also, we have a lot of really young players who are all likely to improve on defense. I expect Hayes, Lonzo, BI, NAW, and especially Zion to be better on defense this coming year.
