What you want is someone to guard them effectively enough that they have to work for it. I don't remember who it was, but CP3 Hornets era Ariza was guarding someone elite like Melo, and they scored around 30, but it wasn't super efficient. They worked for every point against single coverage from Ariza which allowed everyone else to stay home.

That's what you want, someone that will make the star wings bust their arse to hit their numbers while everyone else is free to keep their team mates in check. Hopefully Wenyen can tag team with Josh Hart to be that player.

You don’t understand wanting to have anyone on the roster that can even remotely guard the best players?

Yea but you are asking to take away minutes from Ingram and Hart. That obviously won’t happen on this roster unless you have a really good player behind them. The ideal scenario is for Zion to make a leap on his perimeter defense this season to take on these elite wings.

Depends on the match up. I would think you'd be taking minutes away from JJ and the backup PG or C more than Hart or Ingram. Basically a defense for Offense sub.

I will say this: it appears we have set ourselves up well for next year’s Free Agency which is nice.

It’s also REALLY apparent they have made an effort towards defense and length/wingspan.

The thing about our roster that all our players can be easily tradable or waived.

Nobody seemed to frustrate AD era offenses more than KD/Ibaka era Thunder and recent Philly teams with so much length at every position

Apparently people think Wenyen did sort of ok against AD in the bubble. I don’t recall so can’t say.

And I’ll say again, Blazers fans are huge fans of the guy. Hopefully he can develop into something.

I don’t think we’re going to get anyone that can do it effectively, I think that’s a lost cause.

Ever?

To me that was the biggest roster concern last year and this offseason. And still is.

Hopefully BI can improve in that regard.

I mean there was interests in Patrick Williams. They aren’t going to grab one just to grab one. It has to make sense.

Rome wasnt built in a day. We will just have to piecemeal it again.

And maybe address it next year.

So the conclusion you drew from the difficulty in guarding top 5 players is that you should not worry about matching up with them?

Not sure that’s how it works.

Having a good defender that matches up with the best small forwards is the difference between a guaranteed arse whooping to the ability to slow down and reduce harm. Or in the Kobe philosophy, having someone that can make him work for it and wear them down while you lock down everyone else.

A good small forward defender is also the heart and soul of a modern defense because they can typically guard the perimeter and the interior and switch 3, 4, and sometimes 5 positions.

Those don’t grow on trees. I’ll settle for a competent one.
