I don't think its a matter of can or can't afford at this point, its a matter of will.

Talk is cheap. They can say they are going to do this that and another thing. Hiring Ferry, an internal candidate, is a blow to the perception that they will do a damn thing other than status quo.

Once they hire Ferry, they will then have to go about proving that they AREN'T status quo.

We will see.

That makes me feel a little bit better about Ferry. I don't think he has a bad draft record, it's kind of like Demps', full of incompletes and hard to judge one way or the other.

Ehhh he has a pretty mediocre to bad draft record. It’s not good, we can say that. But he did a lot of other things pretty well.

I agree completely, I want to see a series of announcements in the first month about hires and FO expansion. My point was they can't credibly say they are financially limited in expanding Basketball Operations. Bower might have honestly only been able to afford a Synergy Sports subscription as a scouting department some years, that's not the case for the Pels.

Ferry in a vacuum is not a terrible hire and I don’t doubt Gayles desire in wanting to improve things, but i would be disappointed. This franchise needs an infusion of confidence and passion this summer for what should be one of the most important periods of franchise history. Ferry hire will at least not give off the perception that that will occur. Just a little bummed that i was hoping for more. Hopefully I’m wrong and we can definitely get that energy from other places. I’ll come around and give him a shot if he is the one hired.

New Orleans interim GM Danny Ferry is meeting with franchise officials today about the permanent GM job, league sources tell ESPN. Ferry is the final interview among several candidates, including David Griffin, Larry Harris, Trajan Langdon, Gersson Rosas and Tommy Sheppard.

"Meeting," with the franchise after the rest of the candidates interviewed definitely doesn't make it feel like this was much of a competition.

Ferry may have been there for all of the interviews for all we know... They may have already promised him a POBO role, and he's evaluating whether these guys would work as GM..

from what I've heard about Ferry, it wouldn't be a surprise for him to say "these guys don't get it!", and take POBO + GM for himself

It is what it is. They tell us “look at us! We’ve changed!”

...and then hire someone internal.

It’s pretty funny. Oh well. We will see.

I think there is a better than 75% chance that if Ferry gets the head of operations job, then he will bring over Andy Birdsong over from Austin as his second in command.

Which could simply be as an AGM. He’s only a Director Of PP with the spurs. Would be a good hire by all accounts.

That and Messina as coach would be good first steps in the right direction.

Could be.

But whatever show they're trying to put on now seems kind of lame if Ferry is already the guy. Because, there's clearly some kind of roll out happening over the past few days. The local guys suddenly endorse him, then WOJ starts getting info.

I would be shocked if Ferry didn't get either President or GM (or both). I think they went into this hoping to keep Ferry and get another guy but after interviews, they saw that option as unlikely. So, I think they just go with Ferry

Damn. I'm really beginning to warm up to the idea of Dan Ferry. But I do hope that they also snag Langdon or Rosas or Griffen to create a two-headed monster

Many have already said this, but I'll just reiterate how important I think it is for this not to be a one-person hire. I hope whomever is hired, implores Gayle to hire a full FO team that includes scouts, an analytic department, etc.

Right. They could give him the title of GM or AGM depending on whether Ferry calls himself POBO or POBO/GM. Ferry gave him his NBA start as a scout and operations manager. After Ferry left the Hawks, Birdsong somehow found a home with the Spurs became GM of the Austin Spurs, won a championship and was promoted to director of PP.

In Atlanta Birdsong, Wilcox, and Ferry seemed to be the core of the decision makers.

New Duncan article make it sound as if it will be Rosas or Ferry with a decision coming end of week:

quote:

Team officials have spent a lot of time on the process and would like to have a new GM in place as close to the end of the regular season, which concludes Tuesday night, as possible. A decision could be made by the end of the week, with an announcement coming as early as Friday or over the weekend.

I thought it would be Thursday.

Here’s the Rosas part:

quote:

2. Gersson Rosas impressed: The longtime Houston Rockets executive conducted a strong interview last week and impressed the Pelicans. It should come as no surprise that Rosas would interview well. He has been a popular interview candidate the past few years. He landed the Dallas Mavericks GM job in 2013 and served in the role for three months before abruptly resigning and returning to the Rockets. He also interviewed for both the Sixers and Hornets GM jobs last year. The Bogota, Colombia native is well-regarded in NBA circles and is the only Latino to hold the position of executive vice president of basketball operations.

Which begs the question of why he bolted from Dallas after only three months.

I know Cuban’s an a-hole but he doesn’t work that fast.

There's a lot of articles on the subject. He never comes out and says it but it was because of Donnie Nelson, who was President at the time.

He thought he was coming in with significantly more power than what it ended up being, and Nelson tried to exert more influence and wanted things done his way or the highway. Rosas wanted to create a more Rockets level culture and Nelson wasn't having it.

So he said frick this, and has been waiting on an opportunity that was "the right fit", aka he would have no one above him but the owner and would be able to do things his way.
