quote:None of those sound like a "great addition." He "could" still develop even though 2 teams have already given up on him? Maybe. Better than Poole/Hawk? Sure. Could probably name dozens that fit that category. However, Poole and Hawk are expiring. Is Mathurin better than whatever we could spend that $41 million on in the future seasons? Mathurin is good at getting to the line. He is a bit of a ball hog a times (not as bad as Poole). He also plays absolutely no defense. We would be going from an excellent defender to a sieve defensively. Herb is surprisingly a better career 3pt shooter than Mathurin. He is the type of player you take a shot on if you can get him at a reasonable price. Not sure I would trade Herb for him unless we were getting a solid 1st in return at a minimum.
Mathruin = timeline fit for Fears/ Queen
Mathurin > Poole/ Hawk
Mathruin= Could still develop
Do those things sound like a bad addition?
The people bitching about trading Herb are the same people that don't think we win 30 games.
Please be honest when I ask you: What the frick is Herb worth here if we are a 30 win team?
All of the sudden y'all think we will be winners and its because of Herb? Are y'all being dishonest about Herb's importance or dishonest about how good we are?
When we don't trade for a player we are dumb because all of our players are meaningless and can't win but when we do trade a player we are dumb because that player is the 2nd coming of Michael Jordan. Bipolar arse fans.

quote:Wait. You think getting the 58th pick in the draft is trading Jose at top value? Really? We did Jose a favor to get him to NY. There was zero value in that trade. Where do you see Herb being traded at top value? Would you consider trading him for Mathurin top value?
Jose and now Herb? All y'all have done is bitch about us doing exactly what y'all have bitched about us not doing for 5+ years.

He's a star defender with horrid offense
While Herb is certainly not great or even good offensively; he’s also far from horrid. He understands spacing very well (though clearly needs to be a more consistent shooter) and is a very good cutter and moves well without the basketball. Offense is not simply how well you shoot the basketball.

Well I mean objectively speaking 4 teams gave up on Chauncey Billups. 3 teams gave up on NAW. Guy was the 6th overall pick for a reason. Doesn’t hurt to be in a position where the Pels are in to take a chance. And no Herb would not be traded. They set ridiculously high prices for Herb and Trey just to trade Herb for Benedict Mathurin? Dump Hawkins or Poole for Turner to access the Full MLE.

Mathurin > Poole
Is he?
Is he worth giving up Herb for, or anything for that matter?
He's been in the league for 4 years. He has shot over 34% from 3 once. He and Poole are pretty much the same exact player.
Why would we give up assets to sign a player that we already have? ( we aren't in the tax , or in threat to it, so there salaries are meaningless to me in this scenario, and if anything, Poole is more valuable as a large expiring trade piece)
Mathurin is not part of some future timeline for any team, if he was, he'd be signed by now. Poole has actually been a really good teammate from what it seems like, and if he's here to help Fears get better than i'd rather him for one more year than a new contract for a bench guy.
I"m not saying i wouldn't mind having him, but i'm not giving up a single asset to acquire him outside of a 2nd.

What does this even mean? Herb is a role player. Zion is why we are a 30 win team.
Lou Dort just got 3 2nd round picks. You want to trade Herb for that, b/c I don't.

It was always going to be Herb/ Poole/ Hawk if we made moves.
Says who? Where?

I'd rather trade Herb for Mathruin + 1st > trade a 1st for Mathruin and still need a C.
Who says that is being offered? Who has said we were willing to give a 1st for Ben Mathurin (lol)?

Take out the fandom, Side by side how do Herb and Mathurin compare?

Trading an undrafted player that is meaningless to the grand scheme here for 2 2nds and cash? Yes.
Are you saying that we don't have a chance to get a better player with (2) 2nds than the guy we traded who was an undrafted player who averaged 5ppg? Want to read that back?

We did Jose a favor to get him to NY.

Herb is better and contributes to winning. Herb would not be traded for Mathurin.

When we were originally rumored to like Mathurin and it was understood they match his contract unless they get a pick...
Who said we were trading Herb for Mathurin straight up??

The fact that y'all think if we let Poole/ Hawk expire we get $41 mil says enough.

You do realize you are pretty much the only Pelicans fan on the planet that is ok with this trade?
Jose isn't meaningless.
The 2 2nds we got are worthless.

No. The odds are heavily not in our favor that we find a player that even makes the fricking team, much less is as good as Jose.

Everyone is happy for Jose. That doesn't mean we are happy about the trade.

What we should’ve traded him for?

You don't trade him. It's a business. What we did wasn't a business decision. It was a let's be nice to Jose decision. And i'm ok with what we did for him, b/c everyone likes him and is happy for him. But trading a fan favorite who is cheap and actually contributes to winning for nothing isn't a smart business decision. Maybe Jose told them he wasn't resigning with them so that's why they traded him for basically nothing.

What are we accomplishing by not trading him. Contributed to winning less than 50 games the past 2 years.

Maybe ask the Knicks what they think about trading away meaningless picks to get a guy who played meaningful (albeit minimal) minutes for a team that won a title?
Posted on 7/28/26 at 12:09 pm to LSUgrad88
What does the Knicks have to do with us? are we on their level? What would be different with Jose on the roster? “Albeit Minimal” he averaged less than 10 minutes on the Knicks.
