Duren wants a max contract. I think it's stupid to pay any center max or near max money unless they are at an elite level offensively like Jokic, Embiid, AD, Wemby and maybe KAT.
19.5pts average @ 22y/o is extremely promising. Dude can easily average 20-30pts going forward. Might not be ELITE but its as close as you will get.
From my view, we don't really have anything to lose. It either makes us way better or we trade Zion, Murray, etcc and have a full rebuild team already.

Mathurin
Trey/ Bey
Queen
Duren/ Missi

I understand why we should be hesitant on paper, but when you consider that Poole/ Hawk make a combined $41mil then you are talking about having Duren instead of Poole/ Hawk for a max of +$10mil.
If you send out Herb along with Poole/ Hawk then we would actually get Duren and still have $15-$20mil for the NTMLE assuming no Mathurin trade.
If you take Herb/ Poole/ Hawk you can have:
Duren + $15mil NTMLE
Or
Mathurin + $40mil TPE/ NTMLE
Or
Duren/ Mathurin

giving a guy $50M/yr gives you plenty to lose, especially one who's proven nothing so far. You pay someone that much then they better be able to make you a title contender on their own. If they can't, then they don't deserve to take up over 30% of your salary cap.
and I like Duren, but we better not be the idiots who decide to give him that much money.

This can be said about 30 NBA teams. What is your definition of plenty to lose? Being a perennial lottery team? Being stuck without a true plan or vision? This is exactly the type of move we should look at. It gives us a chance to compete and if it doesnt then you officially start the rebuild now that you have a team of young studs AND the '27 MIL pick.
Its exactly what everyone wants, a clear plan for a rebuild away from the current process.
If taking a chance on a 22 y/o who can be a future stud is a bad idea then what on earth is a good idea?
Trading assets for an old player who may not move the needle is frowned upon.
Making no improvements is frowned upon.
If trading for someone like Duren is also frowned upon then theres absolutely nothing that would be a positive move.

It's still mindboggling that Jordan Poole is out second highest paid player

No, it isn't, but that's b/c i don't think Duren is a big difference maker like you do.
If you want to go spend money and take a chance, then go sign Peyton Watson. 6'8" long high energy defenders who can shoot the 3 are much more conducive to winning than pretty much any center not name Jokic/Embiid/AD/Wemby/KAT.
and Watson is looking for $25-30M/yr, not $50M/yr like Duren. It is highly unlikely Denver matches offers of that much for him. It would cost them an extra $100M in taxes if they did, on top of the already large tax bill they have.
That's who we should be looking to take a chance on. Not some center who can't shoot and disappeared in the playoffs.

The importance of his contract is that we have $34mil to take back in salary. If we didnt have Poole and let CJ walk then we would currently have only $15mil NTMLE with Hawk on the roster and then a $7mil TPE if we trade Hawk.
Poole on the roster gives us options to take back up to $48mil in trsdes instead of about $22 without him.
Now if we don't take advantage of that I'd be pissed but the Mathurin talks tells me there's more to it.

I don't mind targeting a Watson/ Gafford but I honestly view those moves as bad news. It shows the FO is content. We should want this team shake it up or take big chances, that's what we need and what we've been missing for years.
Gafford/ Watson to me are a Val/ Lopez/ Steven Adams move and not a Cousins/ Chandler move. There's a difference.
Its not about the cost of the risk, its about actually taking one.
Let's be real our fans are absolutely miserable already, it really can't get worse. The least we can do is take some swings.

Wtf. Didn't realize he had a an all-nba award. Well whoever gets him is going to have to pay him a max, I don't see him backing down and I doubt the Pistons want to let him go.

That is one way to look at it. I am looking at it from the perspective of what Duren can be @ 24-25y/o if he's averaging 20/ 11/ .8stl/ .8 blks at 22y/o with a +7 differential.
If 25 y/o Duren is putting up 25pts/ 12reb/ 1.5blks a game then I can assure you he wouldn't be the problem with our payroll.
Are y'all defending Gayle now? We don't care about getting better players or winning, just care about not handicapping payroll?
That could be the type of move where its worth it to pay the tax. You are saying not to do it because we could end up exactly where we are. How do you get better then?
If you account for future season then you are really only looking at an additional $25mil due to cap increases so even Duren @ $50mil would really only take up $25million in 2 years compared to current payroll/ salaries.

They really aren't, the responses make absolutely no sense. Why do we care more about paying Duren $50mil than what Duren can do for us or how good he is?
That comment essentially said "well we could add an all star center but he's not the gretaeat center of all time so why do that when it will cost us money".
That's EXACTLY what Gayle and the FO have decided since we became a franchise.
So when we actually get a chance to add that guy the fans agree with Gayle that its pointless to add All star/ high caliber players that would push us into the tax and make us competitive?
Nothing y'all have said in the past month makes a lick of sense. We suck. We need young players. We are upset because we made no moves.
Now we are ok with sucking, ok with not making moves, ok with not paying more for good players, and would rather pass on young assets.
Y'all say we don't have a plan. Any plan presented is stupid or pointless.
Its becoming quite clear that y'all are angry/ upset with absolutely no outlook for our team whatsoever. Y'all hate the team and hate ANYTHING we would do.
What type of assets could y'all realistically want that would make our roster better and make y'all happy if not for a guy like Duren? That makes no sense to me. At a minimum someone give me a player, a vision, something.
All y'all want to do is say "yeah ill pass on that we are fricked any way".

Duren is not worth $50M/yr, or anywhere near that.
It's as simple as that.
Not a single person here gives a shite about Gayle's money, or spending it. You talking about the payroll is retarded, and just shows you have no idea how things work.
What we do care about is spending 30% of the cap space on a guy who isn't a franchise type player.
Let's go over the list of guys making this ridiculous amount of money $45M+:
Curry
Jokic
Tatum
AD
Giannis
Embiid
Brown
Booker
KAT
Butler
PG
Kawhi
Mitchell
Cade
Mobley
Murray
Fox
Bam
Luka
Trae
JJJ
Lavine
Edwards
Haliburton
Siakam
Markkanen
Sabonis
Even some of these guys don't deserve that much, but Duren doesn't belong anywhere near the conversation of any of these guys.
And think about the guys on that list that don't deserve that, and how there teams are doing, and the league thinks of their contracts
Or we don't want to make a stupid decision that likely hamstrings your organization for years.

How does a team hamstring the org by paying potentially their best player along with a bunch of rookie contracts???
If we paid Duren 48mil a year then at the start of '27-'28 we have a roster with:
Fears/
Herb/ McGowens
Trey/ Peavy
Zion/ Queen
Duren/ Missi/ DJ
STILL have $29million space and $45mil with Zion on an expiring. shite you can let McGowens/ Peavy go too.
We would have:
Fears
Herb/ '27 MIL
Trey
Queen
Duren/ Missi
AND $84MILLION
Yeah a full lineup of young studs, $84million space, and whatever assets we get in a Zion/ Murray trade is really "handicapping" the perennial lottery team.
Oh the horror!

Want to keep Bey for $20mil? Awesome! Now you have $64million to add to the roster with:
Fears
Herb/ '27 MIL
Trey/ Bey
Queen
Duren/ Missi
So terrible geez, why can't we go back to the glory days of sucking arse and not trying to rebuild or upgrade!

He was the 2nd best player on a team that went to game 7 in the Semi Finals last year. What did any of our best players do?
Which of our player helped get their team to the 2nd rd of the playoffs? Which of our players was an All Star last year?
