So, it is not a pure leverage play. Griffin is going to really try to bring AD back and get him commit to signing the supermax. He is laying ground work now to show him that this franchise is different. He wants to come to the meeting with actual actions, not just talk of what could be. Word is Gayle will be in the meeting and/or will meet with him separately as well.

This is not for show. They are going to try to get him to buy back all the way in.

I have no problems with this so long as it is supermax or bust.

Smart move. They’ll never get equal value in a trade.

Let’s hope AD likes seeing the changes to the front office plus he lottery results.

Not like there is a way to bring in other players of significance before the end of June.

I mean you HAVE to. Whatever happened in the last few months is fixable. AD > whatever you get for AD. Zion may be the only thing of equal value out there and even then I have some questions.

I think if Jrue can continue to be the alpha and the tone setter everything else could work.

As long as he sticks to the "You're all the way in or all the way out" mantra. AD staying shouldn't come with a short clock, we've seen how that plays out too many times.

If you’re going to try and sell someone on something you have to act like you believe it with your whole heart. So, in that sense, yes “it’s not for show”. They have to go for it.

But it all is for show because everyone knows, deep down, it’s over.

But they have to try.

When you partner breaks up with you for the 5th time and you try one last valiant time to show her you've changed this time and you really mean it

Healthy, motivated, engaged AD is the better value, but do you trust him to be that guy and to stay that guy? If not, I’ll take my chances with a well put together team that has a slight dip in talent but all the intangibles. Not that anyone can guarantee that’s what we’d get.

The only way I keep AD is if we get a top 3 pick in the lotto.

AD on 45-50 Mil a year is gonna kill us.

Gonna be hard to build a legit contender when you only have ~45 million to fill out the remaining 12 spots on the roster.

I disagree. I put the odds of him agreeing at 25%, but to believe that it is 0% means believing that he has some other option that is definitely worth the 40-80 million he will lose. Maybe you are smarter than me and you see one, but I do not see these other fantastic options AD has

Do you believe that his decision will hang on an improved roster, or will the new investment in the FO and supplemental facilities be the tipping point? With limited assests, the idea can't possibly be a super team next season, right? After finding out some things about our organization, I'd want to be traded too. Do you think his pitch will depend on free agency as much as the media assumes? I don't think so. I imagine, from what I've seen so far, is Griffin will put be blunt and set a tone for this organization on the basis of stability and not making Ricky Williams type trades. I think Griffin will act from a position of leverage, Dell I think would have given that leverage to AD despite any attempt not to.

I'll be fascinated to see what happens if they come to some sort of tentative understanding on AD staying and then NY ends up with the number 1 pick and comes calling with a Zion centered package.

What does Griff do in that scenario? Do you pass up on the chance to reset around the best prospect in the last 10-15 with much more flexibility to make it work with AD?

I have ZERO insight into AD's thinking

But no, Griffin's pitch won't center on attacking free agency. He will sell him on a franchise that won't take short cuts, that will outwork everyone else, that will get buy in from all members and create a culture that will overcome adversity when others would fold.

That is infinitely more valuable than just going and getting a Jimmy Butler or some equivalent guy. AD and Jrue are as good or better of a 1-2 punch as any team outside of Golden State. The issue isn't that they can't have a talented enough roster. Look at what San Antonio has on their roster. Griffin will try to sell him that what was missing was the buy in and the culture and he will promise to provide that if AD will be all in with them.

I have no issues with it. I don't see AD making the smart decision.

He's carked it up and made decisions driven on emotion and feelings before. Dealing with money at the level he's on should require practicality and logic.

It would be in AD's own best interests to hear Griffin out and honestly and purely consider all the options.

...but, again, I don't see him making that choice. I don't see him doing the smart thing, because I honestly don't think AD is all that smart.

I feel like this post was stolen directly from my brain. I literally couldn't agree more. I think he will say no for these exact reasons.

I just believe that the damage is done and AD has been fully sold on an exit. There’s really no shot at fixing this relationship.

25% is to me exceedingly high. I’d say 5%.

On top of that, I really don’t want him back. So there’s that.

He isn’t that smart. He’s a follower. A robin. Easily manipulated.

If every team is willing to give the #1 pick and other players for the guy, why the hell wouldn't we keep him if we have the option? The only reason we make any trade is because AD doesn't want to come back. If you value Zion over AD then why would you trade Zion if you were the Knicks? I agree money may be an issue but if we are truly focused on winning a championship, money isn't a problem.
