On a cheap contract, the guy would be a very valuable bench player.

I'm a fan of Bayless, all good options IMO. Aminu is tricky, depending on the number of minutes he'd get. Your offense becomes limited with him and Asik on the floor but we should still have enough fire power. Almost seems like his time's up here.

things are kinda quiet on the marvin williams front
anyone seen anything indicating his market $$ wise and/or his salary expectations?

a 2 yr deal for him (MLE?) would make me happier than using it on morrow

At this point, I hope he stays in Miami just because Sheridan's a douche and he is pretty much guaranteeing he's going to Cleveland.

And Cleveland deserves to keep sucking.

WIth Asik playing C, we need a three that can shoot, and I'm not sure that Monty is willing to give him another chance.

Yep. You can't play Aminu w/ Asik unless it's end of game defense sub situation. They need a 3 who can shoot to play w/ Asik.

But you can roll Aminu out there for 15-20MPG w/ Anderson v 2nd units. Up tempo small ball w/ Rivers, Evans, Anderson, Aminu and another guard/forward could be a nice change of pace v 2s.

If LeBron left Miami, I won't feel quite as bad as I would for him if he never won a title again.

I understand the desire to trade him but do we have a plan in place for THIS offseason to fill the void? Trading him for nothing makes us worse in a season fans need to see a playoff appearance

I agree. I know a lot of people hate Gordon (and rightfully so), but it would be pointless to dump him for nothing at this point, especially with the chance of him opting out next season anyway.

I haven't run the numbers to verify, but this guy is saying with the salary cap being slightly lower than expected we can't dump our way to Asik

quote:

However, the actual salary cap came in $135,000 lower than the projected salary cap. Suddenly, that $32,772 room for error is gone.

Now, that set of transactions leaves New Orleans $102,228 shy of having enough room for the trade.

LINK

But we quickly dismissed dumping as a way to get Asik because you lose your exceptions in the process. A trade has always been the way to complete the Asik trade.

You would not be dumping him for nothing if you dropped all that salary responsibility. It would allow the Pelicans to sign players now including a legit starting SF who can help them today. It would be like a trade that shipped out Gordon and gave them whoever they can keep (and may not be able to keep as of now) plus who they then can add because they dumped his salary.

Unless you trade him for players, you will lose the full MLE by dropping below the cap.

Unfortunately, the going price for a "legit starting SF" is basically the same amount Gordon is making and the only two out there have deals in place. If you are talking about a stop-gap, sure. But who are actual possibilities that make the team better than Gordon does?

I want absolutely nothing to do with the SF free agency market this summer. It is unbelievably out of hand. The wizards are possibly expecting Ariza to get 9+ a year? Deng turned down 3/30? What!? I'll be happy if the pels stay out of 2014 Free Agency. Want to go trade for pieces we need? Great. Otherwise, find a way to get Asik here and pray our guys can stay healthy. We'll be in the playoffs if those 2 shoes drop.

Are these the actions of a man trying to avoid a shite storm, or the actions of a super rich guy that changed his summer travel plans on a whim.

The latter IMHO.

That would be the ideal scenario. But, like others said, there's no real match as far as fit, and salary go with the room we would have from Gordon this offseason.

I agree that Demps needs a plan in place beyond "dump Gordon ASAP and figure out the rest by the deadline." But there are reasonable plans. Let's say that you can create the cap space for Asik with a S&T of Roberts or Jason Smith and scrubs. Then you trade Gordon to Charlotte for a big trade exception and a 2nd rounder, essentially turning Gordon into Asik. You now have $13 million in cap space that you can use for signing guys or trading for guys without sending anything back. Wilson Chandler, Jared Dudley, there are several guys out there like that who would fit now that you have cap space.

You are left with nothing useful to trade away. That's the problem. We're out of assets at that point and still need a SF and a replacement for what Gordon provides.

You are correct except you can get Dudley for free, maybe even get a future pick for taking him on. Denver has had Chandler on the block since the previous GM resigned him, they just traded for Afflalo and may be signing Mike Miller. At this point you can probably get Chandler cheap, maybe a S&T of Roberts or Ajinca.

I feel like every move Demps is made is justified with "yeah, but he clearly has something in mind for the future." Remember "he has a deal in place to move Odom"? What about "Evans is definitely redundant, but Dell clearly intends to move Gordon." It's like people keep watching him shuffle the deck, but he never actually deals the hand. At some point, people are going to have to start taking his trades at face value.

How does the Chandler Parson 3 days deal affect the Asik deal.

I know we were supposedly going to do the deal on July 13. Does this change that timeline?
