I think that you dont need to wait till January.

So many teams are staying pat.
Magic with new ownership. Bucks would like not to pay tax. Suns are not doing anything. Nuggs has still all of their assets. Etc.

It is not an accident that on July 8th there was one trade, one free agent signing and one big extension.

Wait. When someone is hurry - he might make mistakes.
We need only one GM. Only one.
There is no need for Dell to be a bad one...

Ilyasova. Clark. Reed. McGee. Allen. Shefolosha. Bogut. Len. Rose. Mbah Mboute. Speights. Mirotic. Simmons. Lee. Miles. Plumlee. Gasol. Green. Dedmon. Noel. KCP.

And many more. Most of them will cost a ton. Some of them will be available on a bargain.
Because of the market for bigs you might be able to get a third big veteran big for a minimum.
A decent veteran PG for a minimum.

Also other teams with logjam would have to decide on their direction.

I would love to hear about signings. But dont wanna Dell to make mistakes.
And right now to evaluate SL roster...

Hope this means we have a shot at Miles although the news today that the Nets are interested in him is a little concerning as they'll probably offer him around $10m unless they do decide to make a run at KCP

Pelicans are going to lose out on Miles to the Nets. Believe they had more cap room than anybody in the league. Deals looking like ~$10 million for Miles as you mentioned.

Nets, do you roll the dice on KCP or sign Miles with some money left over? Does KCP want a $23 million contract for 1 year in LA because it looks like a short-term deal is the only thing they are interested in but I really don't know if the Nets have the room to sign KCP to longer-term contract?

LA has 17 millions left. Not 23.
Detroit offered KCP 16.
Doubt he will go to LA for a year...

He will wait for BRK, IND. Whoever

He seems to think KCP is worth mid 20's, which I don't get. He's good, but he's basically a poor man's Avery Bradley.

I can still remember those days when we were told we would have a 4-6 player by July 6th......I get nostalgic just thinking about it......but then again, who are we to complain...we signed Darius Miller......the shooter we've been yearning for.

I've always been against the "win now" mentality this team has had. If we don't sign anyone this year and keep our pick, the ghost of Q-Pin comes off the books next year and Asia will be an expiring that may not require a 1st to get rid of.

We will have to sign Boogie, but if we lose Asik and Q-pon's contract and either draft a good player or trade the pick in a sign and trade, won't we have enough money to go after guys like Avery Bradley, Corey Joseph, Lou Williams and/or Robert Covington? I'd think that prospect would be more appeasing to make Cousins stay rather than bring in a guy like Lin for a year with no draft pick next year.

Keep flexibility, wait for an under-performing team (Denver, Portland) or over-performing team (a few in the East that wants to tank but may flirt with an 8 seed, say Orlando) that doesn't like their situation come January, then make a move.

I think waiting is a bad plan. There is two sides to waiting. There may be better deals, but if the Pels are doing well then their pick is worth less than the unknown right now or the team is doing bad and you are burning a pick on someone that may not be able to turn things around.

Right now teams don't know if the AD/DC pairing is going to work. There is a lot of doubt in the media and beyond because of how they ended last year. I think we need to trade the pick now when teams think it could be another top 10. Then we get the most value from the pick and we get to fully incorporate the new player.

Win now was a stupid plan in the past. Everyone signs their second contract and AD was no different. We wasted way too much capital trying to sneak into the back end of the playoffs instead of building a team. However all of that changed with the Boogie signing. We are 100% in win now territory. We are pot committed. We need to win to get Boogie to re-sign. We got a second star, you do whatever it takes to keep him.

Asik & QPon's salary would essentially get eaten up by Boogie's extension/cap hold. Not to mention if you don't win this year, Boogie is gone even if you had space to try to sign one of those guys.

I am all about waiting. But by waiting I mean this summer. Not the deadline.
I agree that it is best to sell pick high (now).
All the moves should be made during summer. At best till the and of July.
Cause we will start to hear how AD and DMC look good.
And now the narrative is that we are losers of the offseason and this pairing is going to fail...

I think lost in all this is that pels really don't have any choice but to wait
they are at the back of the line and holding only one bullet...the 2018 (or future) pick

there's a dozen teams with either cap space or better assets

They also might be waiting to see how Diallo does in Summer League. They are close enough to the tax that they might have to choose between backup big like Cunningham or a backup wing like Miles. Diallo being ready for prime time would make that decision easier. I'm not sure if Diallo is ready yet though. His offense is good enough that he could be a net neutral, but he's bad on defense and that is what was limiting Buddy's minutes, so why wouldn't it limit Cheick's?

they may not have any choice but to play diallo and try to cover for him
such is the fate of a top heavy roster

his defense did not look great. summer league, so whatever. but he doesnt look terribly quick and isnt smart enough to play better angles.

same time, id, obviously, rather roll the dice w/ him than Ajinca or Asik or, god forbid, pay for another big. Diallo at least has some dynamism and potential for growth.

I feel like it's really early to say Diallo is a bad defender. I was way more worried about Cook's defense. Fred Van Vleet basically got to wherever he wanted on the court. Killed us all game.

I'm less worried about Diallo's defense because the backup PF's he will be asked to guard probably won't kill him. A lot of teams won't throw the ball in the post a ton like Toronto did yesterday, which is where Diallo, leaves a lot to be desired.

Fred Van Vleet killed Quinn.

I also must have watched a different game, because I thought James Young looked like hot garbage. His game was way way out of control. I thought Jalen Jones out played him like hell. Jones played 10 less minutes and put up almost the exact same stat line. Thought he alos looked much better on the defensive end too. The team is clearly hyping up Young for whatever reason though so I suspect he will make the roster.
