Trey who otherwise would be playing off the bench.

Why are you so willing to look past Trey's flaws? Is this a backup quarterback situation?

Saying that Trey is a better fit next to Zion isn’t overlooking his flaws, it’s saying that his positive attributes are a better fit with our star. If your boyfriend would shoot open 3’s instead of dribbling into a 15 foot contested midrange shot every time he has a chance this wouldn’t be a conversation.

I'd trade Hawkins and a 1st for Kessler and not really think twice

That’s the deal I’ve been pushing for a while. Not sure Jazz would do it, but makes a ton of sense on our side

Ideally, IMO, Hawkins takes over the Trey role off of the bench after Trey eventually takes CJ's role in the starting lineup (potentially next offseason).

Is a starting center more important than that? Yes, but I'd like to not have to do that

It is a trade that would make a lot of sense for the team though, as it would get us out of the tax (would be at ~170.6 million with 170.8 million being the tax line) and give us a starting center.

You also can't just dump BI because that will make you look like you are choosing money over winning, and that's a very quick way to lose a team. Some version of BI for Allen is about the only realistic trade that is low value while not potentially losing the team.

I don't know if people just don't realize this fact, or weren't around when this happened with CP3/West/Chandler. The entire reason CP3 wanted out is b/c of idiot Shinn trying to dump Chandler just to save money after we just had 2nd best record in the west losing game 7 to the defending champs. It completely soured the team b/c they knew the team was more worried about money than winning.
This new franchise is making tons of money, and are in a much better financial situation than that 2008 team, but the fact that we'd trade someone like Brandon Ingram and get a bit worse just so we can avoid the tax is a really really really bad look and a good way to lose the lockerroom.

I would as well.

Also, If you did this trade, we'd be able to sign Karlo and Reeves and stay under the tax with 14 on the roster, if they were signed to the minimum for 2nd rounders, which is $1,157,153. The maximum they can sign for with the 2nd round exception is $1,862,265

We are currently at $169,917,491 with 12 on the roster.
Karlo and Reeves making $1.1M each makes it $172,231,797 with the tax line at $170,814,000.
That's a $1.418M difference to get under it.
Kessler makes $1.56M less than Hawkins, so if we made that trade, we'd be about $140K under the tax.

Not remotely the same situation. I’m not even sure how you’re drawing parallels between the two? We were an 8 seed that was swept out of the first round last year. And I’m not sure we would technically get worse by trading Ingram depending on what we get back. That CP3 team was probably the best New Orleans team of all time.

I know Hawkins hasn’t had a great summer league but I don’t understand this thinking to overpay for Kessler. He hasn’t looked amazing in summer league either. This is what happens when you’re desperate for a center.

Yep, this is exactly what I was looking at in my post. Skim right below the tax and have a top 9 of:

Zion
BI
CJ
DJ
Herb
Trey
Kessler
Theis
Jose

(I just listed them by salary)

That is a very good roster, but would definitely take some good coaching to get the optimum players on the court together.

Kessler’s game has issues but he is considered an elite rim defender.

If that is what we need and can cover his other deficiencies, it fills a hole.

Sure but is he worth Hawkins AND a first? Seems like an overpay.

I’m not really sure what this post has to do with the point. But we were tied for 6th last year and that was the second best record in NO of all time behind that CP3 team.

No it isn't the same. It's similar. Stop worrying about records between the two.

It's real simple. It's breaking up team chemistry and getting worse just for the sake of saving money.

That's the whole point of what i'm saying. If we traded him and got back good value, then it doesn't matter that we got under the tax, as long as the trade appears to make us better on the court.
If you trade him and get back some shite role players while dumping salary, making it obvious we just dumped BI for money savings, that's the situation i'm talking about. How can you not draw parallels here?

We entered the postseason as the 8th seed in the west. We were not tied for 6th last year. The point is trading BI is nothing similar to trading Chandler. We’re not close to contention like that CP3 team was.

I think they'd just let him walk before doing this.

We are kind of at the point to where getting what we need kind of outweighs an overpay as long as it isn’t horrendous.

Our own picks aren’t going to be worth much anytime soon and we need to decide whether Hawk’s development will continue or if we need to cash in while potential is still being used to value him.

I’m not sure why a Pelicans fan feels the need to work so hard at down playing their own team, but their record was literally tied for 6th best in the west. 2nd all time. It’s a weird flex to quote someone discussing team chemistry by mentioning team records, especially when it’s the closest team we’ve had to that exact thing.

What team chemistry? We let go of JV, Naji and traded Dyson and Larry. You’re acting like BI, CJ and Zion have some sort of contending team chemistry.

Records matter in this situation. That CP3 team was a contender- this one was not.

Because you’re automatically assuming trading BI makes you worse. Ive stated myself we need to get back a center. But if trading BI opens up a better fit and more minutes for Trey/Herb that doesn’t necessarily make us worse. The sixers traded away Harden, who led the league in assists and they got better because it created an opportunity for Maxey.
