Let’s be honest about this upcoming season...

No over hyping, no negative, just honest assessment.
I’m ok with the moves so far. All these people getting excited about the Jrue trade or saying we should’ve kept him need to hold off. I think it’s important that the Pelicans don’t move too fast until we actually see what this team looks like with all the new pieces, which includes a new coaching scheme.
If we try to make a move to win NOW like dealing Dell was always trying to do, we might get stuck with bad assets. Obviously, the big problems we have are: we need to improve defense, need wings who can defend other teams wings, bigs who can help us both rebound, defense, and space the floor, and a point guard who can actually run the offense AND collapse the defense by attacking the basket.
I hate as a fan to have to always say “let’s wait till next year” or “let’s wait and see,” but we still have questions about players and scheme that we need to answer this year. THEN we use our war chest of assets to get that player or players to fill those holes. I like how we aren’t committed to anyone long term besides Zion and Ingram. Let’s see what we need/have to go with these boys and build this team right!

The play in is a realistic goal for this team. Nothing more. If they fail to make the playoffs it isn't a failure of a season. I agree with your takes.

They already experienced the play in last season. The goal should be higher than that.

The goal should be to at least stay above .500, and i don't think that is that difficult to do with this team when healthy.
If not for a horrid start, as always with Gentry, we were playing really well after the losing streak up until the break. We were playing at a pace of a 51 win team. we were 7-23, and finished going 21-13.
I'm not expecting a 50 win season, assuming a normal 82 game schedule when i say 50 win season, but there's no reason we can't be a few games over .500 this year. If that gets us in the playoffs, then ok.
one thing we do have on this team is guys that have experienced deep playoff runs, something we've never really had before.

This team could and should make the expanded playoffs. But I’m saying let’s not get caught up with this year. Long term goals are what’s important. Let’s be honest, we aren’t better than Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, Jazz ,or Blazers. But we have the right building blocks of Zion and Ingram. Build an effective team for the year or 2 after. It doesn’t mean don’t try to win, just don’t try make hasty movies to win it all now, it’s not gonna happen. Build the team the right way and develop. This team has the potential of those OKC teams with Durant, Westbrook,Harden, and Ibaka. But they moved stuff before they knew what they had. Still was a damn good team. But Zion and Ingram aren’t going anywhere. Let’s get a competitive culture in here that knows the goal is compete this year/make playoffs, next year make it to second round, then try to make serious push in 2023-24.

It’s a play in tournament.

Think about how the offense has progressed. Even Monty wanted the Pels to pass the ball and get good movement. Maybe one game every few months the team would play unselfishly and we'd see beautiful offensive basketball. Gentry preached the same thing as what he wanted most and all we got were the same occasional flashes.
Then Chris Finch was brought in and unselfish play and beautiful offensive basketball became a regular occurrence. I'm expecting Stan to do for the defense what Finch did for the offense. It may not gel until later in the season, but that's what I want and expect to see. If they can do that, the success will follow.

Yeah, they had one last season and we didn't make it. It was only 8 and 9 last season, and this season is 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Anyone who made the bubble as an 8th seed or lower played in the tournament. Call it what you want but they experienced the tournament last season.

There is this idea that we are subtracting players and adding players from last years squad.
Thats not true.
We are adding like 50 games of Zion.
THEN
We are adding an improved version of a lot of our guys. I would hope that BI and Zion are even better versions of themselves.

am I the only one that thinks a "barely sneak into the playoffs" season is a pretty big flop for us?
I know we're trying to rebuild from the ground up through the draft, but seems like when you add a player of Zion's supposed ability, you should be able to make a bigger leap than Bubble Playoff team... then you pair him with an all-star forward from last year...

Bledsoe
JJ
BI
Zion
Adams
Hart
Ball
If we are healthy, that's a difficult lineup to match-up with. We should feast on the bad teams...finally...
If one of Hayes/NAW/Kira is good we should be able to make some noise.

When you played more games than the teams who didn’t qualify for the bubble, that is a pretty good indicator.

If Zion plays the way that I think he will, we finish #5-7 in the West.

What?
The equivalent to the play in that we're having this upcoming season is the 8/9 play in that we had last season, not the bubble games

5-7 is harder than you think. Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, Jazz, and Blazers are all better than us. So that puts us at 6. But you still have Mavs, Warriors, Rockets, and Grizzlies. Not to mention Suns got better and Timberwolves and Spurs are gonna be hungry to compete. So you’re looking at every night being a dog fight. It’s not being negative to say we aren’t in the top 5 in the west. Hints why I say don’t make moves too fast. Build the right way and develop the right culture.

41-41 is my floor. Any lower will be disappointing, any higher will be very encouraging. If we break even, I think that's a step in the right direction

This is a 7-8 seed easily roster of Zion is healthy
