He’s been beating this drum for awhile. Here’s his latest. The only major local guy to call for his job for quite awhile.

It’s time.

The New Orleans Pelicans deserve better than this. And yes, Alvin Gentry deserves better than this, too.

In five turbulent seasons of steadily guiding the Pelicans through maddening shortcomings and bizarre circumstances beyond his control, Gentry has served as a respectable voice of the franchise. His upbeat nature and natural charisma have often provided light when so much around the team was dark.

But it’s time for this relationship to end.

The head coach is responsible for the product on the floor. So it’s clear the Pelicans need a new one.

If you haven’t listen to the Polk and Kush podcast you should. Both are absolutely painfully honest. It’s refreshing.

It was time 5 yrs ago. Never should have been hired. Hopefully Griff takes his time and makes the right decision.

Apparently Amin Elhassen thinks Gentry’s job is completely safe. Amin and Griffin are pretty tight and go awhile back.

That’s disconcerting.

A lot may depend on how many current players the front office sees playing on the future contending team. If many pieces are there it makes sense to find a coach now, but if it's anticipated that roster will continue to turn over significantly then I can see Griffin waiting until it's known what coach best fits the pieces Griffin believes will complete. If that time is not now, it doesn't necessarily make sense to bring a coach who fits 20-21 transitional roster but doesn't fit the 21-22 and beyond roster.

If Alvin wasn’t allowed in the bubble he would have definitely been granted another year. Thanks Adam for allowing him to show just how unprepared he was

Just pointing out that Adrian Griffin coached the Raptors tonight in a win in Nurse’s stead.

I don’t think most of us are assuming Alvin gets “fired” as much as he fails up into an office down the hall from Gayle. I haven’t heard Amin’s comments, but if he was told Alvin wasn’t getting fired, getting promoted out of the way isn’t getting fired.

My main concern is the team is spending more than ever on staffing at the same time the pandemic is hitting revenues hard.

I agree, just kick Alvin upstairs. He'll do a good job as a PR man for the organization. I think Kushner hits the mark focusing on Alvin being too loose a coach for a young team. The Pels often start slow--in games and in seasons--indicating they are not properly prepared. They need more of a task master who is going to hold players accountable and light a fire under a team that lacks natural intensity. Some of this problem may be attributable to personnel and that may need to change. But an intense coach can go along way to raising the metabolism of a roster.

Yeah, this goes back to Griffin not understanding Jrue Holiday well enough. If the team had a true leader who would get up into the face of guys who mess up and fail to put forth maximum effort, then we wouldn't miss that so much in a coach. Griffin thought that Jrue could step up and be a vocal leader who held others accountable, and he was wrong.

I think that Zion will eventually be that guy for us, but he certainly couldn't be that guy while missing most of the season and then eating his way out of shape during the bubble.

They have absolutely zero discipline or structure, which is why they suck on defense. ThT is on the coach.

It's ironic that this team needed a Monty Williams type coach lol

This point cannot be overstated. Gentry is under contract for one more season, so while I do not want him back I'm not entirely confident he won't be. During a time with no fans, with no gate and no merchandise sales you're siphoning cash off your bottom line. So, to pay a second head coach plus assistants that may not be smart business from a fiscal perspective.

That being said, if Gentry is gone I would think the development coaches could stay on and maybe the head assistants could get work elsewhere, but you just never know.

I wouldn’t mind Gentry in an FO job. He’s got 40 years of experience coaching and players tend to like him. I feel like we can use another basketball mind in there.

Not to mention Amin's connection with Alvin from their days with Phoenix.

wasn't the rumor that he would be replaced once his contract is up? This wouldn't surprise me

That, and the fact where this will be a highly shortened and unusual offseason.

I am worried that nothing will happen. We will see.
