really surprising that we couldn't finagle a pick in return. and our guy that we got is FUGLY.

I think Marcus Banks is more memorable as "that guy so worthless that Dell figuratively told him "Go sit in the fricking corner."" after we got him from the Raptors.

we didn't get a guy. Just pretend the euro wasn't a part of the trade.

Exactly. Tons of teams have the rights to multiple Euros that have never and will never come over. It is quite common.

That makes no sense to me either. Gomes and a late 2nd round pick are essentially worthless.

The only value Gomes has is that he is mid-range expiring at the deadline.

It might be a 1st.

@WhoDatHornet88 That's if it is a second rounder. Clippers blogger believes it is a top 20 protected first rounder

Yeah, you go from $4 million in cap space to $5.5 million, free up playing time for Vasquez/Rivers, get a $5.5 million trade exception, which may be as valuable at the deadline as Jack would have been, in addition to have Gomes expiring to trade and a late 1st. Not a bad deal.

Meh. A pick in the 20s in next year's draft will be almost worthless. I'd rather us use the money to go after a FA C/SF.

How does the Gomes deal work if the team renounced Belli? Wouldn't it just be like a normal FA signing, making a s/t impossible?

While I agree, I think the pick would be more of an asset type of thing.

Having an extra pick, a nice trade exception, and a 4 mill expiring will all be somewhat useful at the deadline.

I'd still probably spend it on just bringing in multiple players, but it makes more sense now.

yeah, it's pretty bad. There are like 3 players that would've been lottery picks this year and then a whole bunch of average

Interesting point. But if we wanted to do that trade there is no cap reason we would have renounced Beli so the report that we renounced everyone could be wrong.

Looks like we did renounce Belli according to RealGm LINK if they are reliable at all.

Jul 11, 2012

The New Orleans Hornets renounced their free agent exception rights to Marcus Banks.
The New Orleans Hornets renounced their free agent exception rights to Marco Belinelli.
The New Orleans Hornets renounced their free agent exception rights to Chris Kaman.
The New Orleans Hornets renounced their free agent exception rights to Carl Landry.
The New Orleans Hornets renounced their free agent exception rights to D.J. Mbenga.

I *think* that means that the Belli deal isn't happening.

I think it means we are going to use the money to go after 2-3 players, not just one.

But a lot of the moves they have made have surprised me, mostly in a good way. They are doing a good job rebuilding the roster, IMO.

Brown/Mahinmi and Ronnie Brewer are the most obvious targets, and probably could be had for 1 year deals if Demps wants to preserve cap space for next season.
