I still think this team needs more shooting

On paper a starting 5 of

CJ
Jones
BI
Zion
JV

is stacked. But that lineup isn't great from 3.

CJ is the best but BI has been bad this year and JV, after a hot start, has slowed big time from outside. Jones really needs to make a leap.

Off the bench Trey is a gunner but our other specialist,Graham, actually kind of suks from 3.

Really wish we could have got Kennard for cheap when he wasn't even in the Clips rotation at the end of last year.

I like Hart but we need a straight up flame thrower to compensate for our lack of outside shooting.

3 and D guys are in demand but having a good core group around means we can focus on drafting them and signing them.

At this point, we likely have our core or close to it and just need the supporting pieces.

That is still very apparent. For this team to take the next jump they need to get better 3 point shooting internally (BI HAS to get better there), and add a player or two with better 3 point shooting.

I see Trey as becoming the first sub off the bench for either Herb or even Val for Small Ball.

The middle and bottom of this roster will def get tinkered with at least slightly. There's no doubt in my mind that Griff is going to try pretty hard to convert Temple/Graham etc into better shooting/better use of money.

It should have some focus in the draft as well.

I mean if Herb can become a 40 percent 3 point shooter from the corner, that solves a lot of the issues.

We need Herb to be a non-dirty Bruce Bowen

Herb progressing to that would be wonderful.

I’d be fine with Herb continuing to be the defensive powerhouse he is to take pressure off of other guys who can then shoulder the offense.

I’m more concerned with spark plugs off the bench when our starters rotate out.

With JV, if he's not rushed it's near automatic. He'll get a lot of unrushed 3s when Zion is attacking the paint. I think he'll be back to over 40% next season.

Where does someone like that even fit in the rotation though?

I see 2nd units of

Zion/Guard/Trey/Jax/Nance

Jose may not be the best off ball player, but he just makes winning plays that are infectious. It's going to be hard for me to not put him in that guard spot. I would also hope the 8th pick would be vying for some of those guard minutes.

When healthy one of the big 3 should be on the floor at all times. Those Zion bench units that had Kira + Hayes as common ingredients were just demolishing other bench units. The spark plug you're looking for is our franchise player.

I think Nance, Hayes, and Trey off the bench provides good amount of shooting. We can use another in the backcourt and it’s probably coming from a draft pick.

If they end up keeping Graham, you have to expect his shooting will eventually level out and back within his career averages as he continues to get comfortable with his role and personnel.

BI should definitely shoot better from deep with Zion back in the line up and taking up defensive attention.

I think they’re fine.

If I was the king of basketball rules I would abolish the 3 point line.

The pels now have elite midrange shooters and elite paint scorers. I'd rather watch them play their game than watch someone else jack up 3's all game.

As I alluded to...

I think one of the biggest un-talked about storylines this year is how much BI regressed from 3.

he really has not been good at all.

He was a 38 and 39% 3pt shooter the past two seasons. This year 32%. That is very shitty for a player of his caliber.

If he can find that form again...that's probably the biggest step for us.

The game adjusts based off of rules and how the refs call them.

They change rules back to where you have rough and tumble teams like the late 80s Pistons beating the shite out of everybody and I bet you see a return to big men getting the ball inside because they can take the punishment that a small guard likely can’t.

Getting a top 4 pick and taking Jabari Smith or Poalo would be nice

The BI regression is one of the hardest things to fathom

Last year, this lineup with Kira and Hart was very dynamic and one of the best +/- lineups in the league. They destroyed second units in transition, and were pesky on the defensive end too because of their quickness and rebounding skills.

You could argue that having a healthy Kira that has become a better three point shooter would be a good option there. Nance would effectively replace Hart in that lineup as well.

If you dig in it seems to be a combo of 2 things:

1.) Lack of secondary elite talent to free up and set up BI most of the year

2) Shot selection emphasis going even stronger to the mid range.

He takes way fewer wide open shots, and is less open this year.

He's still regressed, and that's worrying(down to 36% on C&S from 40% a year ago), but he's still 44% on the year when wide open(though actually regressed since CJ got here, which is also concerning).

Willie also always loved the mid range game, to a fault, and it wouldn't shock me if he told BI to really embrace it.

But with Zion coming back, BI is gonna have more of those looks, and so will everyone.

....just hoping we luck into Mathurin or Sharpe and can develop them like our Simons though.

This year in the draft use the same approach as last year.

One 6'6" 3&D guy (Mathurin or Agbaji?)
Take the best defensive guy in the 2nd

If we could clear Graham then Delon Wright would be a great fit in the guard spot. UFA this year. his defense advanced numbers are really good. Solid shooter and passer who doesn't turn it over much. 6'5" so he can guard both backcourt spots. I like Jose and I think we can still find 16-20 minutes a game for him, but I'd like to have Wright as the 3rd - 4th guard for us.

We've been better lately.

The last 20 games, we shot 35.3% which would be tied for 15th in the NBA for the season.

Huge "if". Kira is not a good 3 point shooter at all. Would love if he became a decent threat.
