Pelicans swingman Herb Jones will be named to the @usabasketball Select team coached by Orlando's Jamahl Mosley that will practice against the @FIBAWC team when its early August training camp is held in Las Vegas, league sources say.

I like it.

I'm sure Team USA roster doesn't like seeing Herb on the select squad

So people outside of the organization consider these guys really good. Wouldn't have known based on the melt I see on this board about the roster.

I’d hope so after paying Herb 54

4 yrs for $54M is a fabulous bargain for Herb. (But actually, Pels just added 3 yrs to Herb's contract for, on average, an additional $17.3M per year on top of his existing last year at $1.8M)

But I kinda like the 4yr/$54M angle...sounds like a fantastic deal.

I don’t think anyone is complaining about Trey or Herb

Cute coming from the person who wanted to blow up the team for a rookie and gets mad when they decided to run it back. Definitely a voice of reason.

I think you’re a little confused here. I never got mad they didn’t trade for Scoot. I said the entire time it wasn’t going to happen. I barely even watched the draft because of the assumption nothing was going to happen, was watching LSU in the CWS instead. Now if you’re referring to me not being a fan of drafting Hawkins, that too is not mutual with not being a fan of running it back. Really I don’t think I’ve gotten “mad” at anything they’ve done this offseason, aside from drafting Hawkins, though I do think I’m realistic and most of all sensible in my belief that running it back again will land them in the same spot they’ve been in recent history. But again, that doesn’t equal being “mad.”

Lol can imagine how pissed some of these guys will get in practice when Herb is looking them down and they can't get their sets run right.

Sorry, but grandpa would like a little clarification of “ run it back”. TIA

There's some in the fan base who wanted to make drastic changes to the team this offseason. Either by moving JV and even our stars at some point during the off season.

Then they start crying about running it back which essentially means we're going into the season with the majority of the same players we had last season. And they think that because of that, the team won't do any better than they did last season with no account for injuries, tweaks to the roster, improvement from young players, health, and new staff.

A bit more to it than that...& I gotta admit...the Pels (& others) did a pretty good job of not moving too fast to announce the "new deal"

Winning teams run it back. We are a fringe .500 team that has kept the same group for multiple seasons in a row. We are not even a comparatively young team anymore.

It's normal for ascending teams to flip 20-30% of the roster yearly. It's trial and error. What we are doing is someone desperate to prove they were right. Better hope they are. Otherwise this is a massive train wreck about to happen..

JMO: Pels had a team option with Herb for this coming year at $1.8M. It's a business. You don't just "give away" a great option like that...for nothing. Coulda just kept Herb this coming year and paid him $1.8M...then he would be a RFA and Pels would face POSSIBLY having to match an offer from any other team after this year. A bit risky, for sure.

Or...Pels could decline "team option", like they did...Herb immediately becomes a RFA...but, FORTUNATELY, while Herb was technically a RFA for 4 hours, or however long it was before Pels/Herb worked feverishly to come up with a new deal, apparently no other team pursued the Herbster. THEN: Pels offered Herb the new 4 yr/$54M deal...it was actually just an extra 3 yrs for $52 baked into the cake...with the 1yr/$1.8M.

This way...Pels were able to "move the money per year" around...added $10M to the $1.8M for this first year...which, down the road, they will benefit from doing AND Herb gets $10M more for this coming year...which I'm sure he liked. Very beneficial "deal" for both sides.

Don't pretend to be an expert in this kinda stuff...but I'm hoping maybe Pels and Trey can work their own magic in the same kinda way next year.

JMO...I COULD BE WRONG !!

One of the main reasons why they declined the option is that he would've been an unrestricted free agent if he played out the contract. By declining the option they made him a restricted free agent, which gave the Pels matching rights.
