re: Give me your top 3 that you want for Pels at 8 spot

quote:
1) Dyson Daniels - lengthy combo guard, great point of attack and help defense, connective passing, secondary ballhandler, shooting potential
(2) Ben Mathurin - athletic wing with efficient 3 level scoring, very good shooter, creates own shot, explosive athlete, good motor
(3) Jeremy Sochan - long versatile defensive oriented combo forward, great motor, shite talker, point of attack defense, underrated passing, decent playmaker for size, stretch potential
My top 3 as well. Would be happy with any of these guys including Murray or Sharpe or Ivey if any of them fall and Griff wants to trade up to get them. But Daniels especially intrigues me because he’s basically a better Lonzo with better shooting potential and can actually attack downhill and finish at the rim.
A more consistently aggressive defender, driver/ball handler and rebounder than Lonzo plus the upside his shot gets better after working with Vinson? Hell he made Lonzo a decent 3 point shooter which was a miracle itself. Now he gets someone that he doesn’t have to overhaul his shot? Yeah. I’m all in.

I dont' expect him to be there at 8, which is why many don't talk about him, same as Ivey.

I could live with Murray and i could see him potentially dropping as teams fall in love with the more dynamic, young guys.

Murray would be a fantastic fit.
Problem is the Blazers are picking directly before us. We would almost certainly have to trade up and jump them to select Murray.

Ohhhh wow a projected top 10 pick can dunk and make jump shots with no one guarding him. What worries me is his low start to his jump shot leads to a slow release and on top of that there isnt much lift in it either. This could cause a lot of problems for him going up against modern defenders

this is antiquated basketball thinking. The league is way past this. Unless your shot is causing inconsistencies, concerns about release points have proven to be overblown.

Starting low doesnt bother me if he had a one motion shot but his first movement is to drop them ball and its a two motion on top of that. Thats an extra quarter second that teams could occupy doubling one of our big 3

It is not nearly as exaggerated in-game.

Isn't much lift in his jump shot??
Have you even watched him play? Mathurin is a true jump shooter with plenty of lift and a high release. No idea what you're talking about there.
The "dip" your referring to is just a rhythm dip. Plenty of players use across the league with no issues.

I’m still surprised that Pelicans fans that have lived through our battles with injuries want to take a swing on a kid with his injury history. They have already robbed him of his some of his athleticism from his high school days. I actually like some of the handles I’ve seen from him but he is also a player that goes stretches where you forget his out there. He can shoot it but his shooting form is so wide I wonder how that’s gonna translate on the move in the league. Hoping a bad/less than average college defender turns it around in the league doesn’t sound like a good bet.
Agbaji is just a guy in the league to me. If he was 6’8 with his limitations I’d take a swing at him. But a 6’4 wing with little wiggle to his handle don’t care for his game at the next level. He struggles with his finishing at the rim if it’s not a dunk, don’t like that. In the NBA theyall can jump to, can he go under that big and finish the tough layup when ran off the 3pt line?

What about it wouldn’t translate

8 spot is pretty intriguing. after top 3, seems like Mathurin, Murray, Ivey, and Sharpe are grouped. Unless someone else jumps any of them, then its pretty wide open.

I just love Daniels playmaking and defense
He could easily be gone by 6

He has the same wingspan as Dyson Daniels, and is 1" under his standing reach, and Daniels is 6'7".
I can buy your other arguments, but he isn't a little wing. He's definitely on the side of the bigger wings in the draft, just under Daniels and Jalen Williams and Beauchamp standing reach, and he weighs more than every other SG/SF that projects to go in the 1st round, a good 15-20lbs more than most of the top SG/SF.
He's a prototypical 3&D wing role player. If you're drafting him hoping he becomes a scorer/creator, then you're going to be disappointed. He's going to be a very similar player to what Trey is and will be, and i would say that's not what you are probably looking for with the 8th pick.

I agree with that solidified top 7. I don’t see how Sochan, Davis, and Daniels aren’t the next 3 off the board. Maybe someone takes a chance on Griffin, Dieng, or Agbaji but I highly doubt it would be us. I also just don’t see Eason or Mark Williams cracking the top 10.

There are going to be some surprises, like last season. A bunch are already sky rocketing up the boards. Workouts are happening now. Plus we have no idea what the Kings are doing. 2-3 teams ahead of us might trade back. It's an exciting time..

How you value the qualities is how you value prospect.
Defense: you favor Sochan/Daniels/Davis/Adbaji. All long guys who have shown already a lot of fight and will to defend, which is a big part of defending in the NBA and should not be overlooked.
Playmaking: you favor Daniels/Sochan. Both of these guys are already good passers who look for their teammates.
Shot Creation: Davis/Daniels. Initially a big role for this pick will be with the second unit, making sure that group can score and not give up leads. Davis is the best "get your own shot" guy of this group and could be valuable as a Sixth Man/scorer for a long time to come.
Pure Shooting: Mathurin/Adbaji/Griffin. Maybe the single biggest need on the Pels roster is for another guy who can by God put the ball in the hoop from distance. Most nights it feels like the Pels are slogging up hill as opposing teams run out platoons of 3 point shooters at us and we can't respond. So, even though this trio has not demonstrated that they can create for others on a high level, they have demonstrated the ability to shoot from behind the arc which is extremely valuable in today's NBA and a weakness for the Pels.
Athleticism: Mathurin/Adbaji. Both of these guys are explosive athletes who can get vertical in a hurry and have shown good timing in cutting to the rim without the ball.
Intangibles: Davis/Sochan/Mathurin. Grit and fit. These three have shown the most fight, intensity and will to compete. Culture setters.
Leadership: Davis/Daniels/Adbaji. All three project as instant locker room character guys who can enhance the culture without big egos.
Feel/BBIQ: Daniels/Sochan. These two seem to have the best feel for the game and highest playing IQ. Davis is a big shot taker but forces up some questionable attempts. Adbaji can drift at times, disappearing for stretches. Mathurin doesn't show feel at this point for off ball defense (though he's young).
Obviously all these guys offer some good combos of qualities. What the club values most will determine how they rate each guy.

I would be interested in when you’re evaluating a rookie, how do you rate the above attributes?
Or another way to look at it, how do you rank them hardest vs easiest to teach as a coach?
