Free agent acquisitions that make sense and realistic
Posted by irvchilichill1 on 6/25/16 at 12:49 pm117
Remaining offseason moves:
Sign Jeff Green:
He should be our #1 priority and we should talk to him at 12 AM, July 1st. Don't leave his house until he gives a verbal commit. Won't break the bank either and allows QPon to be the veteran 3 and D off the bench. I know everyone wants the Harrison Barnes, Chandler Parsons or Nicolas Batum's of the world, but I don't see any of them signing with us, nor would I take that financial risk with players that are complimentary more so than a true max contract type player. We are not contenders yet, not the best city, although Batum can have a French connection in New Orleans, but not willing to give out max or near max contracts on any. Just be safe and hit the Greens, Jeff or Gerald.
Sign a 2-guard:
Need a strong defender to guard premier guards and when Buddy unable to match because of an off night. So... Aaron Afflalo, Courtney Lee, Gerald Henderson, etc. No need to over spend at this position because of Reke being able to play all of the perimeter positions.
Sign a Big:
Undecided as to whether we need a stretch 4 or a banger. Davis, in essence, will be a stretch big, who will shoot 3's more and more. Asik, while here, could be more efficient in a limited role, time wise, but u need another quality center. Also, we need a backup 4. With Dante Cunningham on the roster and serviceable, I might add, I would love to get a strong, intimidating, paint defender. So... Ian Mahini is ideal for me or Dwight Powell who is young and intriguing. A mix of O & D candidates would be, Marvin Williams, Terrence Jones or Donatas Motiejunas. If it's just an offensive stretch 4, Mo Speights is ideal or Jared Dudley, even though I never was a big fan. Just as long as we don't re-sign Ryan Anderson. Tired of his non-defense being a liability.
There you go, no star power, but you build depth and gain pieces that can help you win and then maybe at the trade deadline you make a move for someone who can make you a threat in the playoffs. Then next summer with a good season behind u, sign a star to team with Davis, if Hield is not it by then.
Do not break the bank this summer on iffy players when we finally got rid of 2 of them and just need Asik out the door if he can't produce. Not sold on Reke being a cancer or a bad contract yet. Just think he needs to be healthy and coming off the bench with Hield to make our 2nd unit a serious threat and maybe one of the better ones in the league. And yes, in an ideal situation and legitimate competition, I would love to see Buddy start the season off the bench and get comfortable. That would probably mean the starter is solid, which only makes the team stronger. Buddy will have his opportunities to finish games. No need to wear him down and hit the rookie wall in January.

No thanks to Jeff Green, he has seriously regressed on both ends.

Bazemore

Are people really willing to overspend on someone like Bazemore?
Undersized for SF and I just feel he will not be worth the contract he's about to get...

I'd prefer to get a banger who can play defense inside and rebound.
And instead of getting a stretch 4, we can get a SF who can actually shoot the open corner 3 with mild consistency.

Jeff Green just isn't very good.

Unfortunately with this salary cap it's not over spending, it's just spending

How many seasons and on how many teams can Jeff Green disappoint before people finally realize he is fools gold?
I swear every season he under-performs expectations and yet you have people on here and elsewhere knighting for the guy as if he just hasn't been given that chance he needs.
I'd rather take a chance on someone like Soloman Hill then enter the fools errand of being the next team to put unrealistic expectations on Jeff Green only for him to under-deliver on them and have fans pulling their hair out.

Mareese Speights is one name I would love to bring in. A veteran C who has ties to Alvin Gentry and would easily be an upgrade over Asik. He'd also be a great benefit for AD in my opinion.

Wait is bazemore only 6'5?
re: Free agent acquisitions that make sense and realisticPosted by TigerinATL on 6/25/16 at 5:04 pm to Macintosh504
Yeah, he's basically a better QPon. He doesn't solve the SF problem, we have QPon and we just drafted a SG. Paying $15 for Bazemore seems like a bad idea to me. I think you need to go after Dudley and a young SF that might be ready to bloom like Hill or Harkless.

No to Bazemore because we don't need a 2 guard. We want Buddy to develop at the spot. Bazemore just forces us to play him if signed.
He's too small to be my ideal 3 and he's not an elite defender to assume he can guard the likes of Bron, Durant, etc. He's just too small. Need a 3 that's 6'7 or above. Batum would be great but I'm not doling out a max contract and not know how he fits with this team chemistry wise.
Get a serviceable 3 on a 2 year deal with team option and then let him and QPon compete to see who backs up on our 2017 team. If they both don't pan out, let em both go.
This is not the year to overspend... Mid season or next year is the time to make the leap to contender....

How about we sign a true SF who isn't complete garbage. I'd rather overpay for a true SF, than a tweener.

Bazemore was 13th in Drtg and 18th in defensive win shares. He's a damn good defender.

I don't see any team prying him away from Atlanta. Atlanta is going to pay him a lot to stay. Especially now with Teague gone.

I will tell you the one thing the Pels like about Bazemore is that he is atop their boards in this FA class in a stat they track a ton - deflections.
They really value that stat more than steals or other rather arbitrary stats, and I was told he is #1 amongst wing FA's there. So, take that for what its worth.
