Games between playoff caliber teams become more intense, physical and important as the season gets closer to playoffs. Pels have won 3 of their last 14 games against playoff caliber teams who weren’t missing multiple stars. The 76ers and Knicks were a shell of their normal teams on that last road trip. Pels have been quite healthy. During this 3-11 stretch, Pels have had multiple games at home in which they were beaten badly pretty much from start to finish. They are doing a great job against the weaker teams, but haven’t been winning nearly enough of the games against the type of teams they might see in the playoffs. Too many players go into a shell and appear to regress when they get hit in the mouth by teams that keep coming.

Last night was the Pelicans experience in a nutshell. I had two casual fans stop me at work yesterday talking about how good the Pelicans have been and that they were excited to watch the game. Every time casual fans start to get on board with this team, they go and get their asses completely handed to them. It is like they don't want anyone on the bandwagon.

I almost hate when national media and casual fans start to take notice because the pels will fold like a lawn chair when it happens

Not even competitive either. Just got their asses beat and on your home court on top of that. I have zero faith in this team.

I think our biggest issue is when teams clamp down on defense we have two major weaknesses.

1. Lack of a true PG to initiate an offense. Zion is great and our best option but...

2. Our 3-point shooters may go from above average to total crap if they're not wide open. So when Zion drives into the wall and kicks, guys like Naji, Herb and Trey have to make teams pay. If not, we're gonna get blown out.

Hell, last night, they were garbage when they were wide open, so...

Willie is going to have to play Ryan and Hawkins more.

We're also playing 4 on 5 at this point with Nance. And Jonas seems out of sorts too. As does CJ.

I didn't get to watch the game, but despite the demoralizing loss, I'm seeing more than a few comments about how BI looked good as a small ball center. Maybe not even small ball, they were saying he looked good defending Jarrett Allen.

This is something I've been wondering about for a while because last year he showed he had put on enough strength to defend down low, and his length means he can play up from the SF spot. If one of BI/Zion/Herb/Trey can play small ball center on defense, that unlocks so much for this team. Removing a shooter or ball handler for a big at that 5th spot is what gums up the works for this team.

What did you guys think of BI at the 5?

Maybe I spoke too soon. Here's a clip from one of the people talking him up. All I see is BI getting beat for a sure layup if Herb didn't steal the ball, and BI boxing out. Now BI did stand his ground well. 2 years ago he would have been backed into the basket, so I still see the possibility, this just isn't the best example. LINK

Definitely One & Done in the playoffs. Might win a game but likely get swept

OP is correct but as soon as we beat a few scrub teams or teams with major injuries people will think we’re making the conference finals again.

Isn't this most teams? If a "true PG" like, say, Tyrese Halliburton continually drives into a packed lane and kicks out to shooters who miss everything, wouldn't you expect the Pacers to lose?

Pels losses almost always hinge on two things:

1. Herb gets in foul trouble early

2. Starters+Trey can't make threes, but instead of letting someone like Ryan or Hawk shoot some, we quadruple down on letting our guys "shoot their way out of a slump", which almost never happens.. Then next game we'll shoot 52% from three and Willie will think he's a genius

Our coach just can't make adjustments on the fly, and is too afraid to tell stars or veterans to sit down when they aren't making shite

Live by the three, die by the three.
It's why you have to have more to your offense than simply kicking out for 3's all game.
But even saying that, if a good 3 point shooter is wide open, they have to take the three. You can't pass up wide open 3's b/c when you do it makes it even harder to score.

There's no need to overeact to one game. It was a bad shooting night, and they were lights out from 3. It happens. Move on to the next game.

We're still 1 of 9 teams in the league with a +.500 recrod against teams with a winning record. We've beaten plenty of good healthy teams this year, Clippers, OKC (without BI), Denver (without CJ), and Minny, on top of a slew of other wins over healthy playoff teams.

What's more concerning to me is we still don't know how to play in the clutch. we are 1-6 this year in games decided by 3 point or less, which is the worst record in the league. That 1 win was the Spurs win where BI blocked WammerJammer on the put back with like 10 secnods left adn then Zion took it the length of the court to put us ahead by 1. It seems we either beat the crap out of teams, or they beat the crap out of us. 40 out of our 65 games have been decided by double digits, and 9 more of them were by 8 or 9.

A very disappointing loss. As Joel said, teams sometimes lay an egg.

Beat the Clips Friday night and we’ll feel better.

Pels just aren’t a mentally tough team so far this year. You could tell in the first quarter. We looked lethargic from the opening tip. Anytime we get off to a bad start, we tend to fold very easily. Combined with 0 4th quarter comebacks, you have a team that mentally just gives up way too easily. This team needs to find some of the mental fortitude they had in 2022.

I hate to say it but we’re a front runner team. If we start well we can blow teams out, but if not we don’t have the mental toughness to stay in games when we’re not playing our best.

Watch the Nuggets play. That’s a mentally tough team.

Sometimes, the shots just don't fall. It happens.

What was disappointing last night was that the Cavs brought much more energy than our guys did. And we'd had an extra day's rest!

Probably the most damning stat is in the clutch we have the 3rd worst net rating in the league, only ahead of the Wizards and Pistons.

CJ has been in a slump. Nance has been pure trash. We need to move off of him in the offseason. His offense is non existent and his rebounding has fallen off. He gets dominated routinely.
