Not all firsts are the same.

Those two believed to be offered by the Knicks are heavily protected and likely to convert to seconds instead. (They are Pistons and Wizards picks with protections between top 10 and lottery)

Wendell Carter Jr is another option as well as Nicola Vucevic but to get either of those guys we have to get off BI’s contract. Portand swapping BI for Ayton seems like the easy thing to do but I don’t want that headcase poisoning the team. If somehow a 3 team trade with Orlando, Portland and the Pels could get us off BI to Portland who can take on his contract, Anfernee Simons or Jerami Grant to Orlando and WCJ to New Orleans would be a good swap for all. Obviously I’d like to get a pick or two also for BI but I would be happy with a starting center that can stretch the floor and open up the paint for Zion while hitting the occasional open 3. We also would have around $25 million in cap savings if we lose BI’s deal and only take on WCJ that you could use to extend Trey. With the crazy amount the players are getting I would offer Trey a 4 year $100-120 million dollar deal as soon as I could as it could very well be an absolute steal like Herb’s deal is.

This debate is becoming a philosophical dispute about the role of the traditional big man in the modern NBA.

I've long been in the camp that the Pels could at least partially solve their cap problem by going cheap at the center position. Just find a few hard-nosed bangers who can defend and rebound and focus resources on your finishing five.

Others genuinely think you've got to have a traditional big to match up with the Wembys and ADs of the conference.

I still think you can play small. Pivots like Sengun, Chet, Wemby, Sabonis and even Davis are not overpowering inside. Smaller guys can be physical with them. I think even BI and Trey can guard them for stretches with success. Bigger guys like Zubac and Gobert can muscle you down low, but their teams aren't running the offense through them. Jokic is his own problem, but no one solves him. He's an automatic double team no matter who you have on him.

If the Pels can land an upper tier center like Allen in a BI trade, then by all means they should. But I'm ok saving the money and running a few guys out there who will hustle, board and have five hard fouls to give...

We've seen Green try going small with very little success on the defensive end. Dyson was the best at it and now he's no longer an option. I don't think BI and Trey have the nuance to play down low effectively for more than just a strategy that's used from time to time.

Only takes some film before teams start to exploit the flaws of their game down there. Team still needs another legit playable big that can give the team 20 minutes a game every single night.

There's no way we should be trouting out Theis, Missi, Matkovic, and JRE to start the year. Trying to rationalize it is a mistake.

It worked much better late in the season, when Zion was in a completely different league as a rebounder. The decision to play small completely depends on the version of Zion Williamson that we get.

There is no possible way this is our opening day roster. I refuse to believe that Griff will actively choose to have the hands down worst center rotation in the league while being a tax team. There is no way. There is too much evidence that BI and Z don’t work and we traded real things to bring in a guy we believe in to fill a lot of the the same things BI provides. We are going to eat a shite sandwich on BI, it’s not if, it’s when.

Given how much WG played Nance last year, this should be the team he wants

So replace Nance with theis, karlo, and Missi?

Idk, I shite in Nance a lot last year, but he has solid bbiq to know where to be despite being beat.

Now the issue comes with the 20 minutes of jv we lost...

No one is judging you. It could be the reason for his poor play last year though.

Or maybe he's exactly the coach to figure this out. This is what Willie has been wanting. He and Collins have been using the Warriors model they brought with them from Golden State, which was built on small ball centers in 6'6 Draymond and 6'9 Looney.

You can play small if your guys rebound. Looney has a career rebounding rate of 17.4%, Draymond 13.2%. Supplemented with guys like Bogut and Javale McGee who are both 17% guys for their career. Their smaller guys have always been willing rebounders, even Curry. Of course they never had to go through a Jokic either. We say what happened when they faced AD and the Marc Gasol/Ibaka led raptors. Three of their titles went through the Cavs who lacked size too

Our best returning rebounder is Zion at 11.3%, Theis is a 13% guy. Murphy and Herb are 7%, same as Steph Curry. We have to have the worst rebounding team in the league

Yeah, Jonas might have accounted for half our total team rebounds

Jonas, Nance, Naji, Zion, Dyson. We lost 4 of our best 5 rebounders from a year ago. Jonas had 315 more rebounds than the next closest guy (Zion)

At least Murray is a solid 5-6 per game to make up from the Dyson/Naji dept.

Really need zion and trey to fight and position better. Can't ask Jones to do it along with what he does defensively, gonna tire out.

Losing the depth for Murray is scary in all honesty. We really need to figure out the Ingram/McCollum conundrum or else we're gonna hurt.

Truth be told we're gonna need a few role players to show up early

Both of those points are scary.

That Jonas has so many more rebounds and that zion was in 2nd

Rebounding is absolutely key and likely not solved by expecting historically ok to bad rebounders becoming good to great. At a minimum they need to bring in someone like Duren to do what JV did last year rebounding-wise.

It takes about 20 games to know what kind of team we have.

I should have clarified this is my “death” lineup. We still need a big body to not get consistently abused obviously. We had Larry Nance closing last year. What does Larry do better than Trey? Defense and rebounding seem to be the concerns but those are both based on effort. Also I’m liking what I’m seeing from Karlo and Messi.
