(Authors note: the only basketball I watch is LSU. Not a fan of the sport in general and definitely not the NBA. That said, it’s an interesting story and I hope y’all get some good reads / vibes from it. Lastly yes I’m in my 50s and man enough to still jokingly call her mommy. Deal with it )

******
I’m not a basketball fan but just found out the Pelicans are playing the Suns in playoff games. Here’s my background story.

Monte Williams(Suns head coach) was head coach of Pelicans number of years ago. He attended our church Fellowship Bible Church in Metairie. He was cut and went elsewhere.

In 2016 his wife was killed and a child severely injured in an accident with a drunk driver. He maintained a relationship with our pastor Bil Gebhardt who helped him thru this terrible tragedy and spoke at his wife’s funeral. Monte has a very deep faith.

Fast forward to today. Just found out Pelican’s coach was on coaching staff of Sun’s last year. He and Monte Williams are very close. It seems he also shares Montes faith.

Suns have best record of wins in all of NBA 60+ to 50+ for all other teams. Pelicans lost 13 of their first 16 games yet they made it to playoffs.

Monte Williams had the worst- fired, lost his wife in his new position, and now head coach of most successful team this season. Pelicans coach a protege of Williams now head coach with terrible beginning but in playoffs against his mentor.

How ironic and uplifting. My point- Trust God! He will bring you thru everything you ever go thru good and bad. He will walk by your side always and carry you when you need Him to.

Happy Easter week.

Yeah its 1 out of the 2 of my knocks on Willie.
It's ok to have a faith, but FFS stop ramming it down peoples throats.

Maybe Zion doesn't like all the God talk also?

Bruh. He doesn’t ram it down anyone’s throat any more than liberal cucks Ram their frickin twisted ideologies down everyone’s throat left and right these days. Get people canceled for having differing opinions, etc.

And Zion and his family have been very open about their faith as well, so trust me, Willie talking some faith here and there is not turning off Zion or his family from the organization.

Not true. If you remember, Mickey Loomis was making decisions back then. Dell Demps and Monty were not co-existing well due to both differing roster building and play style philosophies. Mickey Loomis decided to side with his fellow GM in Dell and axed Monty.

It was simple as that. It had nothing to do with AD wanting it or Monty’s faith.

Sorry for thinking that every time they play well its 'God' the reason they played well.

No! They played well because they put in the effort.
God may have given them the gift to be able to play this sport at this high level.

Absolutely beautiful thread and this is why I had "Micah 7:8" tattooed on my side.

I think it works for this group cause all the core guys Cj/BI/Zion are pretty spiritual/religious, and as long as it doesn't become Mark Jackson weird(meaning fire and brimstone preaching, out grouping players that don't tow the line, not to mention all the aspersions and hypocrisy) I think most atheists(or just non-spiritual people) like myself just sort of role with it the way I did in sports with religious coaches. As long as Willie doesn't get over the top with it I'm sure it'll be fine for 99% of players.

I’ve never heard of a player in any sport having a problem with religious coaches.

Most of the players are black and a lot are from the south, I don’t know that I’ve ever met a black kid from the south that doesn’t at least believe in God and most are pretty religious

Most people also grow up with it in sports.

Like I would be shocked if any American player in the NBA didnt at one time have a coach making everyone huddle in prayer, or give some religious tinged sermon before a game, or claim gods on their side. So yeah, I dont think Willie's religious tendencies will create any issues.

The only time I ever see anyone invoke politics and ideologies on this board in an aggressive, tribal, and hostile way it's been conservatives, so maybe put down that rock in that glass house you're standing in.
