but by that time we would have already done the swap right?

I didn't realize this was the actual question everyone keeps asking about. Even if we weren't blocking their ability to trade their 2023 pick by holding rights to their 2024 pick, they could not trade away our ability to swap with them. They already traded that, we own it. If they were free to trade a 2023 pick the team they traded with would essentially be trading for our pick.

I knew at the time we’d gotten a treasure chest of a haul from the AD trade, but who knew just how good that would look only a couple of years later.

Here we are, a young and hungry team with a coach to match. Several all-star caliber players and some that could develop into that. A very young generational type cornerstone piece. Contenders in the making in Nola.

And we could possibly add SEVERAL lottery picks, likely even top 5 or better in the next few years. It’s crazy! I need some shades for how bright the future is right now

We talked about it at the time, but Griff bet on an Old Lebron and a fragile AD, with almost no way to acquire depth, and dysfunctional ownership, just completely falling apart a few years down the road.

And he was right.

Sorta the same thing he did with the Bucks: betting on a "small market" not being able to keep it going for 6-7 years.

From The Athletic article on the game:
quote:

“The Basketball Gods aren’t with us,” Davis said.

The Basketball Gods gave the Lakers a scare in the second half, when Davis, who’s still battling back soreness, re-aggravated his back. He was laboring up the floor and moving gingerly in the third and fourth quarters, unable to have the same effect he had in the first half.

“He’s fine,” Ham said. “He wouldn’t have been able to finish the game if (he wasn’t). Getting that shot in the back, we were all a little nervous at that point and time but he was able to get through the game and give us a lot of good production. But he’s fine.”

Davis added: “It feels good. Got hit in my back and it just kinda irritated it again, but I’ll be fine. … I just gotta keep it loose.”

We can't blame Westbrook since he didn't play, so let's blame it on The Basketball Gods.

if AD is truly having back issues, it won't get "better" without rest. It will be with him on some level all season.

Methinks they will sit him at some point.

One, why would we do that?

Two, a three way swap is possible but I can’t think of any team that would want to do that trade if the Lakers are going to be godawful and we will be a playoff team.

Best case scenario for the other team is that our pick is around 16 (last team in playoffs), which may not be much better than their own pick.

That's not legal. Us possibly owning their 2024 pick is what's keeping them from trading their 2023 pick because of the Stepian rule. The Stepian rule is the reason it's just a swap and not the Pels already owning the pick in the original trade.

that makes sense. didn't think about that.
Thanks.

Funny I saw a lakers fan throw it out there that they should trade the ‘27 or ‘29 unprotected pick to waive the swap this year. Most thought we woukd say no lol.

Wouldn’t be the worse idea to push a prime asset further into the future and still have a first this year to maybe package with Jax or Graham to bring in help if needed to make a run this year.

By the way, Sam Vecenie has a mock draft out at The Athletic.

The top 5:

1: Victor Wembanyama
2: Scoot Henderson
3: Amen Thompson
4: Nick Smith Jr.
5: Cam Whitmore

I’d say no because having what looks to be a top 5 pick this year bleeds the Lakers to the point where that 24-25 deferral should result in another high pick.

If the Lakers get Wematanye, then they now have either the ability to package him for assets to replenish their stores OR they have the player of the future to bridge the generations that they thought they were getting in AD.

If we let them bring in talent, then 24-25, 27, and 29 are worth far less than that 23 swap.

the trade looks great from our side, obviously.
look how bad it is from the lakers side though

IN: AD
OUT: brandon ingram, josh hart, lonzo ball, darius garland, dyson daniels, 2023 1st, 2024 or 25 1st

If we wanted to help them, we could trade off the deferment option on the 24 pick so that they could trade it. Or, we could agree now to defer it to 2025, which would let them trade their crappy pick this year (our pick).

But in a draft with Wembanyama and Henderson at the top, I think the chance of us doing anything of the sort is near zero. Why would we want to hurt our chance at a top-2 pick?

I wouldn’t do it either just for the off chance they do hit the lotter. It would make my stomach sick if we could have added Wemb or Henderson.

I don’t think they will continue to be this awful, unless AD or lebron get hurt. Think they pressure Pelinka to make a trade soon that will win them some games but not enough to get into the playoffs.

The delusion in that organization is scary. We’re talking sovereign citizen level of delusion.

Again, we're heading into a draft where Wembanyama is universally considered the best prospect since LeBron, and Scoot Henderson is compared favorably to Ja Morant at this point.

Getting either of them could make us into a dynasty.

They have to have a partner.

Problem is that the only real partner I see is Indy and Indy may raise their price to two unprotected firsts and a swap in 26 since the Lakers thought that this would be a buyer’s market and chose poorly.
