I think Beal stays in Washington for years. He had the opportunity to leave and decided to re-sign.

Maybe, but I think he and Lillard and I'm sure some other guys too wanted that super max contract and years, knowing they get the money and the control over where they get to play with a no-trade clause. Now whether they'd approve a trade to the Lakers in cap hell is another story.

Basically says they can't make a trade using a '23 1st until draft night, and that Pelinka may wait until them because for a short window he'd be able to trade 3 1sts and Westbrooks huge contract for a big name player to get his "big 3"

I think you could see them get someone like Beal at the draft. Wizards get some future draft capitol and get off Beal's future albatros of a contract. Money would probably work
no, it wouldn’t work. Lakers don’t have any salary to send out without Westbrook’s contract. Unless they send AD or lebron
the have those two plus two minimums under contract for 2023

I think Windhorst’s idea was “that cap space is now open to take in a big player.”
Limits are that they have AD and LeBron under contract to begin with and are limited in salaries they can ship out to make space.
LeBron and AD will take up about 65% of the cap space.
They can theoretically shoehorn in someone making 35% of the cap into that spot but they come back to a lot of the same problems as this season where they have no bench and all the work falls on the stars.
Only contracts besides those two are Max Christie and Damian Jones (player option), which total about $4m.
Any team looking to trade would be doing a straight salary dump in addition to taking in three picks. Not a lot of teams are necessarily looking to rank for the 24 season because no Wematanye level player has emerged yet.

yes that’s right
they don’t have enough space after AD and lebron to take a max player in free agency.
if they don’t escrow that Westbrook salary slot (like GSW did with Durant for Russell and eventually Wiggins) they are pretty well fricked.
They cannot let that salary expire or they’ll be right back where they are today

Right. There's a new report that, in the offseason, the Lakers turned down a trade with Utah for Conley and Bogdonovich because they didn't want Conley on the books next season taking up their cap space.
According to this article, they should have about $35 million available, and they have been planning to sign Kyrie with that.
I think that they have a handshake agreement with Kyrie to sign for that amount.

now one thing they can do is extend Westbrook on a 1 and 1 (team option) at a similar salary to a player they do want to get (Irving for example) and then do a sign and trade

They wouldn't have made the moves that they did if they didn't already have an under-the-table agreement with Kyrie to sign for the $35 million that they'll have available.
But, with as bad as the Lakers are going to be, relying on Kyrie to honor that might blow up in their faces.

their max possible cap space is $35,945,602 for 2023 with only Davis and James on the books. I suppose it’s possible that Irving or someone else would take that, and they’d be down to minimums and the taxpayer MLE for 12 more roster spots
that seems unwise

what we can all agree on though is that only poverty franchises operate this way (barring the Durant cap spike)

This is all so fantastic. Love reading this thread.

From Statmuse:

The Lakers have a 97.1 offensive rating this season. Every other team in the NBA has an ORTG of 100+.
They are on pace to have the 3rd worst offensive rating in the last 20 seasons. Only the 2012 Bobcats and 2015 Sixers are worse.

From ESPN Stats and Info:

The Lakers are shooting 33-for-148 on 3s this season. That 22.3% 3-pt FG pct is the worst over any 4-game span by any team within a season in NBA history (min. 125 3-pt FGA).

Here's some heavy-duty cope from @LakersSpin

The lack of whistles for Lebron might be the worst for any superstar in NBA history.

The Lakers apparently have a team full of masons because they are laying bricks everywhere.
Posted on 10/27/22 at 8:14 am to GOP_Tiger
IIRC, the Bobcats were tanking for AD and the Sixers were smack in the middle of The Process.
The Lakers just got to that level via ineptitude.

As far as the Lakers playoff hopes go,
