Hank, Willie, Merle and JC

That is the only list that is close to perfect. All were gifted songwriters which is difficult to do.
Hank passed away while JC was in the Air Force. He was able to grab the torch and keep country music on the radio while rock and roll almost put it to extinction. Willie was a DJ in the 50s and played some of Cash's biggest hits. He got into songwriting soon after. His voice didn't fit the Nashville sound of the 60s and thus found a home in Austin. This type of country music had a rough edge to it that Nashville ignored.
Merle doesn't get into music if he never watched a JC concert in prison. He had close to 40 number one hits and wrote almost all of them. They say George Strait is the king but he was never the songwriter or as musically gifted. He can sing it, write it and play it. He could do impersonations as well.

One of the great songwriters of any music genre. Inducted into multiple hall of fames and songwriting hall of fames. Came up with a distinct sound that was so simple but groundbreaking. One of the founding members of 50s rock with Elvis, Lewis and Perkins. Out sold the Beatles with a live album at a prison. Brought country music around the world while others in the past could not. Superb when it came to novelty songs such as a boy named sue and one piece at a time. Saved the arse of Nashville many times from irrelevance. Never predictable and his albums reflected different genres from rock, country and folk. One of the very few Nashville artists that spoke out against the Vietnam war and his Ballard of Ira Hayes almost cancelled him for good. His work attracted other artists to Nashville such as Bob Dylan that gave them exposure to a bigger audience.
His bass-baritone voice makes him a perfect narrator and fits well with a lot of his songs that were dark and depressing.

Just keep Willie Nelson and his non-singing voice off.
His voice isn’t for everyone
But I’d rather listen to someone who sounds like Willie Nelson that’s writes and plays music that I like than listen to the greatest voice in the world but I think their music is shite.

I don’t get the infatuation with Hank Sr. Never have. Miserable arse music.
Watch this, first...then see if your opinion changes any.

1. Hank Williams Sr.
2. Merle Haggard
3. Jimmie Rogers
4. Willie Nelson
Hank Sr. is a definite yes...there are half a dozen other artists who could legitimately slip in to any of the other 3 slots. These are mine.

It depends on the criteria used but if you used “who made the biggest impact”, here’s mine:
Hank Sr
Johnny Cash
Loretta Lynn
I hate this pick but it has to be Garth

Depends on what your idea of country is. For me it’s: Strait, Cash, Hank JR and Merle.
That’s my own list. If you disagree, go frick yourself.

Bob Wills
is still the king.
I was driving through Palo Duro Canyon in Texas once and came to Bob Will's hometown of Turkey, Texas. There was a big memorial to him and a big statue of a turkey coming into town.
I didn't see a single person in the whole town, it was middle of the morning, I guess there must have been some kind of event someplace. Anyway, on down the street was an old gas station that had been restored like an old gas station from the 40s or 50s and Bob Will's old bus was on display there. I stopped and walked around and checked out the bus. That must have been rough travelling for a band back in those days.
