Layne. I just prefer AIC much more.

LS. Just personal preference. Both were incredible.

I do think Cornell, as a lone voice, was as good as anyone I've ever heard in Rock.
Staley was a really good singer IMO but seperated AIC was the harmonizing with he and Jerry Cantrell. Those were the best harmonies in Rock and Roll since the Beach Boys.

I don't know that I could choose, TBH. I think it would be Alice in Chains but I can't say I wouldn't change my mind tomorrow.

I would say that Cornell had a better voice. More range, amazing scream. Song-wise, I can't call it. I like my favorite Soundgarden songs as much as I like my favorite Alice in Chains songs. Live, I never got to see Soundgarden in concert. I did get to see AIC open for Ozzy back in '92.

Layne
Cornell is great, but Layne brought more emotion and feels into it. Plus he can hit different sounds and tones. Cornell had a phenomenal pitch, but Layne had more uniqueness similar to Mike Patton, though nowhere near his level.
I'm sure I am mangling my description. In my head I know what I am trying to say

I feel the same way. Enjoy both bands immensely though.

It's such a classic discussion, because I fully and wholeheartedly believe Layne was the voice of grunge.
He had the best voice in rock and roll. Still does.

For me it's definitely Cornell. He had the greatest voice of his generation and an all-time rock voice.
The word "had" in that sentence is one of the saddest things to ever happen to great music. RIP Chris....

Another for liking AIC as a band more, but I could listen to Cornell sing the ABCs and be happy. His voice was amazing.
This.

These discussions always end up in a “shite on Vedder” thread. Vedder is great. Vedder is alive. SWIDT? Vedders voice did NOT age as well as Cornell. Cornell is my answer to the OP.
Staley died way too young. Never got to hear his voice age. Most of the great sounds Staley made were due to harmony with Cantrell. Which was beyond incredible for a two part hard rock band.
The end of Staley’s life he still sang but struggled. Because he was killing himself. The AIC unplugged is greatness but he is struggling and Cantrell is covering for his friend.

My top 5 vocalist of 90's rock/grunge:
Chris Cornell
Scott Weiland
Layne Stayley
Shannon Hoon
Kevin Martin (Candlebox, not grunge but dude could belt it)

Excellent question and thread. This one is pretty much a toss up to me.
But if I had to guess, I would still give the slight edge to Cornell over Staley.

I’m in the Cornell is a better singer but I lean towards AIC crowd. I love both bands. I was so pissed Cornell took his life.
Cornell and Dave Grohl both got famous in one band, formed another and had same success.
