Yeah, it's hard to compare Smashing Pumpkins because their sound was very different but still in that grouping.

You missed out then.

Not really... I mean, I heard them all, it just wasn't to my taste... I actually saw SG, PJ and AIC live at various points...

STP was just kind of a joke band to me...

Why was STP a joke band to you? That makes absolutely zero sense.

I could hear acoustic Plush once a day and it wouldn't be a bad thing.

It only ranks as my third favorite Soundgarden album.

I rank as follows not because dude died. But means most to me:

Soundgarden - Superunknown
STP - Purple
Nirvana - Nevermind
STP -Core
AIC - Dirt

These 5 are closely ranked in my book.

Pearl Jame - Ten

I would argue that Nirvana is overrated comparatively speaking to most of the other bands. This thread is the first time that I can remember that most people DON'T rank Nirvana far and above everyone else. FWIW, I think Nirvana is a great band, but I'm with most others here, I think some of the others were better. I always felt that KC's controversial death and its timing had a more impact in solidifying Nirvana as the epitome of the movement rather than their music. IMO, both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam (and even their collaborative side project Temple of the Dog) were the true epitomes of the genre.

I feel like we're not discussing the right albums for the groups in this thread.

Badmotorfinger > Superunknown

Facelift > Dirt

Core > Purple

In Utero > Nevermind

No song gets me fired up quite like "Superunknown". It's heavy and those Cornell screams are just epic.

The STP hate is surprising. They had some really good tunes, especially on the first and second album.

I don't hate STP, at all. I just ranked Purple last on my list because I like the others better.

I did think Tiny Music. Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop was a horrible album though. Huge expectations and nothing really good from it.

Yeah, it had some singles, but they were kinda weak compared to what preceded it.

I was in my early 20s in the 90s and a huge fan of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
Stone Temple Pilots just seemed like a joke at first, because they were such a Pearl Jam rip-off in the early days. Like it felt they were assembled by a record company to cash in on what was going on in Seattle. A lot of people thought "Plush" was a Pearl Jam song -- Eddie Vedder told a story about someone going up to him in a deli telling him how much they loved that song. I warmed up to STP as time went on and they got a little more creative, but I never bought any of their albums or saw them live.

My ranking...

1. Ten
2. Dirt
3. Nevermind
4. Core
5. Superunknown

Badmotorfinger was a better album than Superunknown, IMO.
