Stone Temple Pilots just seemed like a joke at first, because they were such a Pearl Jam rip-off in the early days
I never got this. There's not much on Core that sounds like anything that Pearl Jam has ever done. Could you imagine Pearl Jam doing "Sex Type Thing"? Vedder and Weiland have similar sounding vocals, but that's about it.

STP: California jock rock wanna be's
Didn't help that Weiland wasn't the most likeable character

Yeah I don't get the PJ, STP comparisons or that STP ripped PJ off. About the only STP song that sounds anything like PJ to me would be Interstate Love Song.

Plush was their first big hit. It sounds a lot like Pearl Jam. Sex Type Thing came out first and was what got me into them. I remember the cd being hard to find until Plush came out.

STP> Pearl Jam. Think PJ is overrated.

I like PJ better, but I do think they're a bit overrated. They made 4 good albums, Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, and No Code. The rest are kind of bland, or just plain suck.
STP sounded more like Soundgarden than PJ.

This thread just proves that Nirvana smokes the rest of the genre

The sounds from STP going "And I feeeeeeeeeeeel it" sounds similar to PJ's "Freeeeeeeeeeeezin. Rest his head on a pillow made of concrete"
The long drawn out E sounds similar. That's it.

Facelift > Dirt
Facelift had some good songs and "Man in the Box" is one of the awesome trademark songs from that era, but Dirt had a variety of different sounding songs, better melodies, etc.

In Utero > Nevermind
In Utero had some good songs too, but I didn't know anybody that listened to it like they did to Nevermind. Some of the songs just sounded like noise at times.
As for STP, Weiland sounded somewhat like Eddie Vedder when I first heard them, but as they went on they got more different sounding. They had a run of big hits with Plush, Creep, Vaseline, Interstate Love Song, Big Empty... Say what you want, but Weiland was a monster vocalist.

better melodies
IMHO, the melodies are what makes me place Facelift ahead of Dirt.
Sea of Sorrow, Bleed the Freak, It Ain't Like That, and Sunshine are some the most melodic AIC songs.

Superunknown embodied a time (90's) and place (Seattle). It was Soundgarden at their peak balance of anger and musicianship. For me it was the best Seattle had to offer at that time in my life.
I knew other teens who preferred AIC or Nirvana but they had never listened to Superunknown in full.
Superunknown was wonderful from begginning to end with the exception of "Kickstand".
It was one of those "you had to be there" moments.
