What's a band that you used to hate but have grown to love?

System of a Down
I got sick of their hits after hearing them nonstop in the 2000s and wrote them off as another shitty nu metal band. Started listening to more of their songs and they are really damn good. Serj/Daron's vocal harmonies, Dolmayan's drumming, and the nonsensical lyrics create a unique sound that's hard to stop listening to. Some of my favs:
Forest
Metro
Innervision
Lost in Hollywood
I-E-A-I-A-I-O

Journey, my mom loved them and I hated to listen to them when I was a kid. My mom always had their tape playing in the car 24/7, She actually went to a concert in the Astrodome to see them when she was pregnant with me.
But now I’ve learned to really appreciate them. Neal Schon had great tone and killer solos and Steve Perry’s voice is insane.
Thing that bums me out the most is my mom never got to know how much I love them.

Used to never care for The Beatles until I actually listened to their full albums. Years later and I still can’t stop listening almost daily

Hated Springsteen as a kid in the 80s (though I wasn't very familiar with his 70s stuff). It all changed when I got to college in the late 80s/early 90s... by listening to his early stuff... I now even love his 80s output, even though a lot of it is way over produced, but thats a lot to stuff in the 80s.

Mastodon. I wrote them off completely when they first came out. Grindcore just isn't my thing, at all. It wasn't until years later when I borrowed someone's iPod while on deployment and heard "Divinations" that I realized how much their sound had transformed. I love them now and am convinced that these days they can do no wrong.

Their first 5 album are excellent.

Disco era Bee Gees. As a rocker I hated all that Saturday Night Fever music when it came out.
Really fond of it now.

Same thing for me with Mastodon. Wanted to like them at first but couldn't get into it with the rambling riffs and mediocre vocals.
Just took some time and they got better at singing haha

I used to hate the Rolling Stones as a young teen because my first exposure to them was on MTV when the Tattoo You album came out. Just thought that they were corny older hippie retreads. As I got older I started listening to all of their early, bluesy stuff and fell in love with it. I get the hype now.

Closest I can think of would be Siouxsie and the Banshees. A friend loved them in the 80s and I thought that their music sounded really weird. Definitely like a lot of their music now.

The Doors. After seeing Oliver Stone's movie about them I have really come to appreciate their music.

Fleetwood Mac for me as well.

Disco era Bee Gees
I was having a conversation with a co-worker in his 70's sometime last year and I don't recall why the subject of the Bee Gees came up. I told him they were a great band to which he responded "meh I don't like disco, never did". Not sure why people have the notion that mostly all the Bee Gees did was disco. If you look at their music catalog, not even 5% of their music is disco.
Regardless, they were a great band and I would rank them top 20 bands of all time. They were excellent songwriters, too. The "One Night Only" concert marked my life when I was in my middle 20's, it helped me get thru a divorce at the time.

He probably likes that shitty Folk music from Peter, Paul, and Mary types. He should know that they had plenty of songs that weren't Disco. But even if you don't like Disco, the songs from Saturday Night Fever are still great songs that have held up really well.

Tool
I always wrote them off when I was younger because I couldnt get into the long developing epic songs. One day my buddy showed me right in two and completely changed my opinion. They are now one of my all time favorites.
Edit: Great choice with SOAD. They are so unique

Another vote for Fleetwood Mac here.

Rush... Couldn't deal with the singer's high pitched voice.

phish
the lyrics are still juvenile and borderline retarded but I can dig the grooves. Plus I respect the effort they put in to the live show
