Or Walk The Line.

Another recent favorite was the one about the musicians of Laurel Canyon in the 60's and 70's.

I believe Walk The Line has been mentioned, but yes it is surprising that Ray hasn’t gotten more love in this thread…damn good movie.

Oldie, but excellent movie, and Kim Novak makes anything better.

Forgot to put American Pop in the Hollywood Division. Though since it is Bakshi I'm not sure it really belongs there either.

How Walk Hard Almost Ruined The Musical Biopic. Some good points in that article about how music biopics usually suck. I agree.

'Blues In The Night' was released the year before.

Pretty good little movie about a traveling band, w/a very rare acting role for Elia Kazan
Great recommendation

Just a wild, wild movie - a strange but compelling combination of musical, romantic melodrama, and film noir that somehow works on all three levels. Also has one of the most disturbing cinematic representations of a total nervous breakdown by Richard Whorf, plus features the luscious Priscilla Lane, and Jack Carson in a rare semi-serious role.

And as a special bonus: the only feature film appearance by Jimmy Lunceford and his orchestra
