Were the late 90's/early 2000's the worst era for music?

After Kurt died things just kind of sputtered about for a few years, slowly declining until Hole put out Celebrity Skin in 1997.

1998 saw the rise of Korn, Limp Bizkit, which eventually begat Kid Rock, Disturbed, and other even shittier bands like Methods of Mayhem.

Meanwhile the boy bands were in full effect, along with the worst of Britney and Xtina being pushed to the moon. Radio and the record labels still had control of what most of us heard on a regular basis.

Metallica was too busy fighting Napster to make any decent music

Biggie and Tupac were dead, Nas had fallen off, and garbage like Juvenile & co, were the only rap you heard other than Eminem, who I have always thought was overrated and also just annoying as a human being.

NIN, Marilyn Manson, Tool, and Deftones were the "good" music of the time, most of which doesn't really hold up today relatively speaking.

Kid A and RATM were the only real shining lights.

These were the dark ages as far as I'm concerned. It wasn't until 2003 or so that we came out of it. I remember seeing the video for Maps crack the top 5 on MTV and finally feeling some hope.

Maybe for popular music, but a lot of my favorite albums of all-time came out in that period:

Perfect From Now On
Keep it Like a Secret
Emergency and I
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Lonesome Crowded West
The Moon and Antarctica
OK Computer
Kid A
The Soft Bulletin
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I mean, if your exposure to music is FM radio, I could see how it would seem to suck, but there was a ton of fantastic music put out in that timeframe.

This. Galactic was on complete fire in the late 90's through Katrina. It was an amazing thing to watch.

i do agree with the OP that there was a ton of bad music that was very popular, most of which is referenced above.

for myself, the very early 2000s is when i discovered all the great mid to late 90s rock music that i previously ignored (because i was only listening to rap/hip hop during the mid to late 90s).

Anyone have some good obscure rock bands out there for me to check out? The main ones I've discovered are Rival Sons, Crobot, Black Water Rising.

The popular rock bands at that time were pretty bad but you had bands like Slipknot, SOAD, LOG, KSE, and Mastodon all starting to make names for themselves in the late 90s. Slipknot and SOAD both blew up fairly quick, then you had LOG, KSE, etc all get big around 2003. That pretty much killed off nu metal.

the strokes
moby - play

IMHO, music just has improved since 1990. While you have better years than others, it consisently has been on an upslope.

but it still wasn't hard... maybe if you were a kid..

because of the internet, I find you have to go through so much more crap to find really good bands...
