Rock/pop music in the Eighties was pretty abysmal, yes or no?

Yes: 1. McCartney hugging up on Michael Jackson
2. Michael Jackson
3. Tepid, vomit-making new wave a la Culture Club
4. Hair bands
5. Former rockers abandon guitars in favor of keyboards, synths, and drum machines, resulting in really bad records. This includes Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, Don Henley, Glen Frey, Yes, Heart, Starship, and many, many others.
5. Bryan Adams, Billy Squire, etc.
6. Rash of "edgy" girl singers like Suzanne Vega, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox

No: 1. Good new wave, particularly those that incorporated third world influences. This includes The Police, The Clash, Elvis Costello.
2. Punk still kicking it.
3 Rolling Stones, Queen, Bowie still kicking it
4. The Pretenders, Van Halen, G&R, Metallica, Ozzy, and some other good new acts.
5. College Alternative takes off with R.E.M. and others in that vein
6. ???

The Smiths were about as perfect of a rock/pop band as imaginable.

There was good, there was bad

As usual in post-60s rock (at least in the US), the good stuff was seldom very popular

The good was very good, and the bad was fricking atrocious, some of the worst until this decade.

It was pretty awesome. There was some really shitty stuff as well but some fantastic pop music came from that decade

There was bad, yes. But overall, probably the greatest decade yet for modern popular music.

No. May have been the best decade for pop music

4. Van Halen,

Van Halen is one of my favorite bands but they certainly fell victim to the 80s synth wave themselves. Lots of 1984 and 5150 was synthesizer keyboard crap. Still irks me that their first #1 hit was the cheesy as hell "Jump", which sounds like a high school kid in his basement with a casio could have come up with.

I wouldn't go that far (my vote would go to the 70s) but I would call it the last good decade for popular modern music. The drop off from 80s to 90s was like falling off a cliff and the drop off from 90s since was like being rolled over and falling off an even larger cliff. The 80s were the last decade in which you could every format on a pop music station. Up through the 80s pop radio played rock, country, soul, and pop. After the 80s it was nothing but pop.

No the 80's were good in their own way.

Every decade has it's own flavor. Do you drink Dr. Pepper exclusively or do you like a Coke, 7-UP or Orange Crush once in a while?

It seemed bad compared to what came before it, but now seems great compared to what came afterwards.

I like the 70s and 90s better. And since the 80s should have been my glory day music it’s not like I’m not predisposed to liking 80s music. A lot of my faves are 80s - but on average it just wasn’t a great decade by comparison.

Van Halen lost me at jump. I liked Panama but damn it got overplayed. Some of the hairballs were good but honestly, it's one decade where I don't go back and listen to stuff. Can't say that about 70s or 90s.

It has been a steady decline since the 1970's.
