This thread has me listening to the WYWH album this afternoon.
I went to see Dark Side of the Mule last week so I've been in sort of a Pink Floyd mood lately.

Nothing like the Floyd - I think that's the collective judgment of the Music Board.
Truth.
I haven't thought of anything closer than Porcupine Tree but here are some other ideas:
Godley & Creme
Brian Eno
Camel
Happy the Man
U.K.
Ozric Tentacles
Gong
Jordan Rudess
John Petrucci
Levin Minneman Rudess
Stick Men
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Particle
Phil Manzanera/801
Radiohead
Rudess Morganstein Project
Liquid Tension Experiment
Steve Hillage

Sonofabitch this album is fantastic.

Maybe try Neurosis but they're probably too heavy for you
Times of Grace this one is kind of Tool-esque in its layering of sounds
The Eye of Every Storm not as heavy

Radiohead is an obvious choice - probably too obvious. They do take a lot more liberties with instrumentation than Pink Floyd did.
Failure, at least on their "Fantastic Planet" album, has some of the same feel, although they are quite a bit heavier.
Hawkwind is probably the closest you're going to find. Give this album a listen:
Warrior on the Edge of Time

The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Seriously, give this a listen if you haven't already. It checks all your boxes. Plus, the same guy that did the artwork for Pink Floyd's albums (Storm) did it for this one too. Listen on Spotify or other streaming service if you can as all the songs bleed into each other, much like many of Pink Floyd's albums.
Rick Rubin produced it...so there's that. John Frusciante plays on most tracks. Jon Theodore is amazing on drums (now QOTSA drummer). Cicatriz ESP is very Shine on You Crazy Diamond and the payoff is great.

Thanks all for the suggestions, some good music I never heard before.
Going through it all, Hawkwind and Porcupine Tree are the closest bands to what I'm looking for. Gonna try it out tonight

I like Queensryche, yet not sure they will meet your needs.

Look up Bjorn Riis and Airbag. He runs the gilmourish.com website and is an amazing musician. Gilmour is his main influence, so his music just oozes Floyd.

"Souls at Zero" is a legendary album, especially in terms of originality. Every serious music listener should hear it a least once. Math Metal way before the prog metal of the 21st century.
I see someone already mentioned King Crimson.
Egon (of Stones Throw records) has an awesome podcast called "Stone Cold Psychedelic Soul" that you can find easily with an internet search.
There are lots of collections of 60s obscure psychedelic records put together by vinyl heads. Find them and snatch them up as they dont stick around long. Or just listen on the tube.
To be honest, the only albums that will take you to the same place as PF will be post modern IDM.
I highly recommend Future Sound of London "Dead Cities." Give it at least 5-10 listens. Ignoring the one dance track (even its dynamic and psychedelic as frick) it will take you to another dimension like few other albums. Ive heard it thousands of times on almost every drug you can think of.

Some others have mentioned King Crimson. While no one sounds like Floyd, early Crimson is kind of in the same realm. Check out In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, or Starless and Bible Black. Try to check out early King Crimson live. They did a lot of improvisation in their live shows that could really get out there. And crank up the volume. There will be times when the music is very soft and delicate and others when it's loud and intense. It's a great ride.
One of my all time favorite psychedelic albums is 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit. It covers a lot of sonic territory and is strong from start to finish. It's more jazzy than Floyd but if you're looking for a lot of layers, it fits the bill. It definitely passes the acid test.

Frequently The Church. Occasionally Catherine Wheel.

King Crimson, Porcupine Tree and Mars Volta are all good answers. Opeth has some stuff that kind of compares but might be too metal.
