I know this gets asked a lot but I have yet to find a good answer...

I'm searching for bands with a similar music style to Pink Floyd. Very meaningful songs with deep and multiple instrumental tracks layered beautifully on top of each other.

The normal responses are Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and Led Zeppelin, etc. but these bands aren't anything close to Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd's albums all have their own theme, and the songs intertwine with each other. Not too poppy, trancey, or heavy... just meaningful progressive, psychedelic rock.

Any help here??

Maybe try something like David Bowie's station to station - i feel like you are looking more for great prog rock as opposed to psych rock though.

The reality is though that Pink Floyd is very unique and hard to replicate with any sort of success. Kind of like asking "someone recommend me something that is as good and sounds like Talking Heads"

The closest "more" modern band for my money is Tool. Now, Tool is a heavier band, but if you haven't listened to them I would suggest trying Undertow as an album all the way through. If that's your cup of tea, welcome to a whole new world.

But a lot of the intangibles that make the Floyd unique are present with Tool.

Skimmed through that album, it seems decent but doesn't have the instrumental depth of Pink Floyd. It certainly is difficult finding a match with them.

That has some potential... might give that a try tonight.

I love Tool but too heavy for the purposes I'm seeking

Quite literally. Check out the song Idiot Prayer on that album.

While I tend to agree with that, a lot of this is subjective.

I mean, for your money is King Crimson close? Deep Purple? Santana? The Replacements? Rush? Asia?

If you can only tell us what it isn't, then I don't know if I can get you any closer.

you're looking for more atmospheric type stuff. There is a ton of it, but not in the classic rock catalog. there is a lot of organic techno type stuff. Try Boards of Canada

Yeah I was thinking about that one too. Not as spacey as Floyd but you certainly can't complain about the musicianship.

Also, Hawkwind came to mind but that might be too heavy.

There are a few bands around today like MGMT, tame impala, or pond where I’ll here one song or even part of one song and think about Pink Floyd. This song by MGMT is one. The song isn’t really that great but the groove at the end always makes me think of Pink Floyd. It starts at about 3:08.

I really meant the song, long instrumental intro and all but you need to listen to the whole thing.

Also you are going to need more description, what Pink Floyd styles / songs are you referring to. You aren't giving much to go off of here.

Good luck. I've never found anything that satisfies like PF. Even Porcupine Tree is a few notches down and that's about as close as you'll get.

You might give Legendary Pink Dots a listen. They are much darker and goth than PF but are influenced by PF, especially Syd Barret PF.

This thread has me listening to the WYWH album this afternoon.

Nothing like the Floyd - I think that's the collective judgment of the Music Board.
