meh. It's a good album but let's face it. It's way more popular or trendy to like them now than it was then. Not that it's a bad thing. Appreciation at any time is better than none at all.
The best of that one is Wave of Mutilation but I actually prefer the surf mix version.

When I first heard this stuff on Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim, I thought the human mind has never produced anything like this before. Frank is so bizarre and twisted, and his primal scream with Joey's wailing dissonant choked out Les Paul, and Kim's girlie backing vocal chanting, it just blew my mind and still does today.
Doolittle refined all the insanity into a more potent rock sensibility:
No. 13 baby
Just totally original and unique. Sick and demented yet somehow relatable to the human experience. I cant explain it. Much more abstract than JA.
I loved JA, but Pixies was a revolution to me. I dont think there as been anything that creative since.

It is a shame that some consider the Pixies trendy, trying to wrest merit from them by applying said moniker.
I saw them in England and followed them while living in Spain, when they couldn't even get a damn gig in this country.
The Pixies B-sides alone are superior to an amalgam of the best of JA and DJr (again, I like both bands).

I don't find Jane's to be groundbreaking at all -- but they are nice heavy metal band with a wierd lead singer. I enjoy their stuff, but I never much connected with it, nor saw much of their influence on anything that came after. I guess they were the first metal band to adopt "none of my favorite singers can sing". But I always viewed Jane's as the band you play to your metal fans to get them into stuff that's more interesting. Great gateway band, but not a stopping point. I think they introduced a lot of kids to the underground because they had a very "mainstream" sound. They were an easy band to like. I still like 'em.

The answer is the Pixies. And cdwag and I must;ve hung in different circles. The Pixies were HUGE at the time amongst my frineds. To this day, they are the only band I've actually been in a fistfight over (over their remake of Head On by Jesus and the Mary Chain). They evoked huge passion at the time, though they are much bigger now in the sense that mainstram music fans are more likely to me familiar with them. Which is great. Go buy Surfer Rosa right now.

That show was incredible. I went there for Love and Rockets, and they were good, but Perry stole the show.
I think we went to the Blue Crystal after the concert.... trippin times man.

You're right. I didn't Run in any circle that were Pixies fan other than the feeling of just another 80 s alt band. I think the tarnish on Janes is this crap they're releasing now. I think your view on Janes is like my view on The Pixies.

Didn't make it to the Blue Crystal that night. I did go after the Love and Rockets show in 89 though.

Wow. Were you there? That's precisely what happened. The only thing you left out was the passionate J&MC starting the conversation by saying he hated the Pixies because they ruined Head On forever. I said, "you mean improved?" or something like that and then, off to the races. We were quite drunk.
And cdwag's probably right about the East Coast thing. Music is still pretty regional. It's one of the things I like about a band like, say, Drivin n Cryin. To a Southern alt-rock fan of a certain age, they are a seminal band. To everyone else, they are barely a footnote.
I cetainly lean to DC bands (and Boston, but not New York). Odd.
Yes, I am a crazy person. But a crazy person with a great record collection.
