I own FOUR Sonic Youth albums. That's how hard I tried to like them. I just don't. I don't think lack of exposure is my problem.

I really do WANT to like them. Oh well. I guess I'll just listen to the Pixies. And forget the haters, Trompe le Monde is surrealistic brilliance.

i was at this show in 02
LINK
saw the guy's dat set up and, and instead of talking (in risk of ruining the recording) i wrote my name and number on and gave it to him
(felt kinda weird) but he sent me the only copy of the concert.

It was one of the best shows i've ever been to, and i've been to hundreds of concerts, and i have the high quality bootleg

I absolutely LOVE both Janes and the Pixies and as I stated earlier, I kinda go Jane's 1 and Pixies 1a.

I saw JA in New Orleans on the Ritual de lo Habitual tour and Smashing Pumpkins opened for them. There were hallucinogens involved, but it was amazing to say the least. Small venue, maybe 400 in attendance.

This song is one of my all time favorite hard rocking tunes...

Ocean Size

These songs are a few of my all time favorites by JA.

Jane Says

Been Caught Stealing

Classic Girl

Standing in the shower

Some of their less popular tunes like My Time, Three Days, 1%, and Pigs in Zen are great as well.

This re-make of Lou Reed's song is better than the original IMO...

Rock and Roll

and I like this version of Sympathy for the devil about as much as the Stones version and that's saying a hell of a lot b/c the Stones version is one of my all time favorite songs as well...

Sympathy

Overall I'd put these songs right up there with the best of the Pixies. I'd give the Pixies the nod on overall influence in music and as Cdawg mentioned earlier, the new Jane's stuff is terrible and they need to hang it up, much like the Chili Peppers.

Pixies = most influential band since the late 80s IMO.

Even though i dont care for all of these bands, i would consider soundgarden, alice in chains, faith no more, nin, beck, ratm, rhcp, and many, many more vastly more influential than the pixies.

Every now and then a band comes around where its catchy, and not commercially successful, so people can still feel good about liking an unknown band. it becomes cool to say that you like them and their fame grows after twenty years and no one wants to be the guy that says you dont like them.

i dont like the pixies. i dont see their influence in music.

can you honestly say that the pixies are more integral to music than trent reznor and mike patton?

I can, but of the original list I think Dinosaur Jr. is equally influential... I guess it all depends on what kind of music you like, because beck is the only one I kind of like out of...

yes it does, because none of the many bands sound a bit like, nor were they influenced, by those people you posted...

I bet most listened to pixies and dinosaur. jr

just to make sure im understanding your logic. a list of influential bands: soundgarden, alice in chains, faith no more, nin, beck, ratm, rhcp, pixies, dinosaur jr.

you would pick pixies and dinosaur jr as tied for the most influential of of that group since the late 80's?

the Pxiies were hardly some unknown band. They were on Elektra, a US major label (4AD is a British label - for those of you who are about to mention 4AD, they signed with both labels). Melody Maker named Surfer Rosa its album of the year. They had videos on MTV. Sure, they weren't massive, unavoidable stars like U2, but they also weren't some garage band no one had heard of. Three of their albums charted in the Billborad top 100. Their real problem is one of timing... by the time their sound was popular, the band had broken up because they all hated each other.

Not only as Nirvana openly admitted to copping the Pixies style, so have Radiohead and Weezer, two pretty obscure bands. Though a contemporary, Bono also admitted to trying to write Pixies-esque songs on Achtung Baby.

The Pixies aren't the first band to ever use LOUDquietLOUD dynamics, but it is their signature style, and they did popularize that form of rock songwriting. And yes, bands are still copying their blueprint.

I think the only 1980s American band with more influence than the Pixies is REM. Even more amazing, they only have four full length releases, all released in a three year period (88-91).

Yes on the Pixies. No on Dinosaur, but close. If you look at their "families", bands influenced by them, the Pixies family is huge and the Soundgarden family is pretty small (great band, though).

Just a blurb, from allmusic.com and it couldnt be more fitting to the debate at hand...

quote:

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise

They are hugely infuential...

not literally unknown, but there are bands like flaming lips, sonic youth, wilco, etc... that no matter how many times they are played on mtv, they are not in the popular vein of music. you wont walk through a high school and see those hoodies on girls. for the general public they are unknown. hell the band only got its elektra deal because of fame in europe. they were relatively unknown here.

I like Jane's Addiction (maybe better said, 'liked'), but there is no comparison.

Jane Says and Mountain Song were tremendous, Been Caught Stealing sounds like it was penned by/for Offspring.

Someone earlier said something to the effect of f*** the haters, Trompe Le Monde is surrealistic brilliance or something of that nature. It would be hailed as a tremendously important album had they not produced others. The Pixies were quite simply fresh, original, prolific and cutting edge.

One of my favorite things about pop music is that there is ALWAYS another band to discover. Whether it is an "influence" or a "descendant" of the band you like, there are millions of connections out there. Like the Beatles? How much Buddy Holly have you really heard? You'd porbably like it. As well as power pop, an entire genre devoted to, well, sounding like the Beatles.

Just today, someone introduced me to Bright Moments, because I like Arcade Fire.

Heres a bit of advice.

When you dont know about something, dont talk about it.

The Pixies are EASILY one of the most influential bands of the last thirty years.

Cobain credited the Pixies with giving him his sound.

I am thinking you havent listened to a lot of Pixies.

REM were influential, no doubt, but not to the extent of the Pixies. Some may go to the extent of nowhere near, but yeah, a most definite second in the influencing department IMO.

I really like Sonic Youth but willingly acknowledge that for every really great song there are 2 that are total crap - nothing but feedback and mumbled or hard to discern spoken lyrics in the background. Some of their great songs are good for the first 3 minutes then melt into 5 minutes of feedback and clanging instruments - I just don't see the "art" in that. Anyone who says they enjoy that shite is lying, trying to be cool. Really they're just waiting for that shite to end and hook back into the song.
