eta: its similar to the effect the Velvet Underground had in the 70s. Someone once said "not many people heard their music, but everyone that did started a band"

Jane's Addiction
for me The Pixies are like Depeche Mode.... they have some really excellent songs, but I could never find an album I liked from start-to-finish.

Same here. I think they are more popular now than they were back then. Sure they had a some hardcore fans but I think they have way more fans today than they ever did. I think Fight Club had a lot to do with it (joke, but not really). Personally I prefer Frank Black's solo work more. Now this is only my viewpoint but at the time, the Pixies were just another alternative band no different than XTC or Psychedelic Furs.
Some say Pixies may be more influential, I could argue against that, but Jane's way more groundbreaking coming out of LA than any other band at that time. The chili peppers were close only b/c their style had more funk. But that was the hay day of hair spray, make-up, glamour, excess, boozing, and party girls singing about just that. Then here comes this band that's singing about whores, grit of the city, scum, and making social commentaries on the LA scene screaming the part of dirty junkies in rags with dreadlocks. The music and look wasn't punk, it wasn't metal, it was a fusion of both with a sound not like anything else and it was grunge before they called it that. The only thing close was maybe Sonic Youth.
I saw them open up for Love and Rockets at Tipitina's Nov. of 87. Never heard of them and my ticket actually said James Addiction. Opening for Love and Rockets I thought they were going to be some typical soft sounding alternative band and man was I wrong. Right before they came on some guy next to me asked me if I ever seen them before. I said no. he just said watch this. I remember going to Tower Records the next week and buying that Triple X record.
I think Perry Farrell is a great artists and visionary in every sense. But that is for another topic.
But anyway, that's how I remember the two bands at the time.

me either. Other than Kurt Cobain saying he tried to rip off a Pixies tune. I think today's alternative maybe sounds more like the Pixies. That is my only guess.

One of the things about Dinosaur Jr is, the melodies take time. I did not even know some were there until 3rd or 4th listen. Almost none of their songs are the type you hear once and love. I end up liking that kind of song more and for longer.

I would say the majority of indie rock bands over the past 15 years were heavily influenced by the Pixies.

I would argue that Perry Farrell's involvement w/ Lollapalooza over a couple of decades adds impact that you're probably not factoring into the equation if you can give JA credit for that.

I loved Jane's Addiction ever since I saw them open for Love and Rockets at Tipitina's back in the 80's. None of us had ever heard of them then, it was right before Jane Says got big. They were so unknown at the time that Ticket Master even got their name wrong on the ticket. It said "James Addiction".
I wish I still had that ticket, I bet it would be worth something.
That being said, the Pixies are my choice. They were revolutionary, influential, and just badass.
Dig for Fire is untouchable.

Dinosaur Jr was my favorite growing up.

I think Doolittle is one of my top 5 albums and think it is gold from start-to-finish.
