The rap game is in shambles right now largely because of Lil Wayne (post Carter II) and acts like soulja boy. It's fallen off hugely over the last 5 years.
Hip-hop is where it's at. Good hip-hop that actually addresses issues while sounding good is fantastic.

I would say you have your Brother Ali's, Jurassic 5's, Atmosphere's and then you have your Jay's, Lil' Wayne's, Young Jeey's The latter is usually your gangsta rappers as opposed to your hip hoppers
Idk if thats the legit definition of the two terms but I could get behind that segregation of the two

I can't believe yall dont see a difference between rap and hip hop. That really does astound me. But, those are just examples that popped into my head. In no way a legit definition, but there is a distinct line between the two. A lot of the better rappers out today lean more towards hip hop instead of gangster rap (old kayne/lupe)

I see the distinction you are making I have just never thought of it as seperate like that.

Historically, hip hop is the culture. Graffiti, breakdancing, djs and mcs, the 4 elements.
I tend to use the terms mainstream and underground for the differences in rap. Regardless of what you call it theres a HUGE difference these days between the two.

I think its funny when people bash a musical genre or culture because they dont understand it or identify with it.
"Regardless of the talent it took to make it, I will not listen to rap or hip hop because I fricking hate the way it sounds." ?

compare groups like blackstar, a tribe called quest, and the roots with the lil waynes, soulja boys, and those who only rap about money and drugs. Huge difference

Rap - not really music, just bad poetry
Country - Cheesy
Christian Music - Cheesier
Raggae - All sounds the same. The quarter beat upstrokes bore me.
Blues - Kind of boring. I find it playing hard stuff just for the sake of showing off. Melodies are lame, no hooks.
Heavy Metal - Not usually melodic
Light Rock(anything on 96.1) - Really annoying
Anything else I left off?

so what do you actually like??

Lots of rock, indie, alternative and pop. Not radio pop really.... Some hip hop, classical(or romantic rather). Lots of other stuff. It's not like the genres I picked were that broadly reaching outside of rap, country, and blues.

Also, bear in mind I don't think all of those suck(some I do). I just won't listen to them because I don't find them enjoyable enough to listen to over something I enjoy,
