Well he didn't stipulate but all the songs on Opiate and Undertow were written at the same time.

So now if songs weren’t written in the moment, they don’t count?

So what’s the time frame, have to be written within 6 months of albums release? How about 9 months, is that ok?

What about if a member leaves, technically they aren’t the same band, so can’t count that either...

Van Halen 1984

Might not be their magnum opus but was their commercial peak.

No doubt, but their Magnum Opus was their debut, Van Halen.

Genesis' magnum opus was Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (6th album) and if not that then it was Supper's Ready on Foxtrot (4th album).

Rolling Stones Exile (16th)
Beach Boys Pet Sounds (11th)
Prince Purple Rain (6th)
Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (7th)

Physical Graffiti is a collection of throw away songs they cobbled together. One of the most overrated albums of all time. I, II, and IV are much better. You can argue that Dylan, Talking Heads, and Paul Simon all had great albums before the ones mentioned so could be a argument against those listed.

You pick their worst record that is a rehashing of their previous work as their magnum opus?

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia and Deadwing are 7th and 8th, respectively.

Opeth - Blackwater Park was 5th and Ghost Reveries was 8th

I think what would possibly disqualify that album is the notion that adding Buckingham/Nicks and losing members created a totally different band. Heck some bands renamed themselves with less of a change.

Pink Floyd--Dark Side of the Moon (8th album)

Dan Fogelberg--Phoenix (4th album)

Steely Dan--Aja (6th album)

Jimmy Buffett--Changes in Latitude,Changes in Attitude (6th album)
(although personally I'd go with A1A, 4th album)

Quadrophenia #6 (to me it's their Magnum Opus)
Live at Leeds - between Tommy and Who's Next

In any case, the Who got lights out better after their first three albums. And then unfortunately fell back to earth after a roughly 4 year run of greatness.

I know most consider Metallica’s third album, Master of Puppets, to be their best. But their fifth full-length release, known as “The Black Album,” was a commercial monster and sounds as good as a hard rock album can thanks to the stellar production of Bob Rock. The record boasts five hit singles that nearly everyone’s heard at least once, something few other metal bands can boast of.
