Judas Priest's first three albums are kinda weak. Wings was okay but basically all of their best material started with Stained Class (#4), with British Steel/Screaming/Painkiller all having good claims to being their magnum opus.

The Black album was a commercial success, but obviously Puppets was their peak.

It is credited with making metal mainstream. It is clearly their most important work. I agree with you that Puppets is their peak, though.

In terms of songwriting as a band for what their fans appreciate, or success as a band?

Because losing Cliff was huge, Him and Alex Webster imo are guys who reinvented the instrument for metal. Cliff brought a lot if creativity, influence and talent to that band.

For fun, I ran across this..Its Pantera live covering Metallica's whiplash.

Phil is on guitar (even hits a solo), Dime is singing and Jason Newsted is on bass lol

whiplash

Leftoverture-Kansas (4th album)
Moving Pictures-Rush (at least their 7th studio album)
Songs in the Key of Life-Stevie Wonder (don't know the exact number but it is way past his third album)

I would say that his Magnum Opus period started with "Music of my Mind" in 1972 (#14) and continued through "Talking Book", "Innervisions (his best), and "Fufllingness' First Finale".

Perhaps Neil Young. Harvest was the 4th album and then Harvest Moon was like the 20th.

Sonic Youth was around 5 albums in before they hit their stride.

Steve Miller Band, as well..

Has anyone mentioned Jimmy Buffett? A1A was his 4th album. Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes was 7, and Son of a Son of a Sailor was 8.

I've always viewed Van Halen's debut record as their best. While 1984 may have been their commercial peak thanks to the exposure allowed by MTV, there's nearly as much keyboards as guitars and to this listener, that ain't peak Van Halen.

Rumours

While some people may not like Fleetwood Mac, it was unquestionably their best album, and the one that dealt with the most personal issues. Everyone was screwing everyone, and it came out in the songwriting
