because (Prince) was a musical genius and one of the best guitar players to ever live? he played every instrument in every song on his first album

I know, I get that he could play instruments well. As a musician that fact isn't lost on me. But what he put out musically was bad (the end product I mean). And I don't mean to pick on the guy, I just really never understood why people were so in love with his stuff. It feels like I missed a movie everyone watched, but later when you finally watch it, it's too late to appreciate it. I feel like I missed the window I had to be in to hear his music and like it.

Loved Eddie Money in the 1980’s but thought his voice sounded like hacksaw Dugan

Um, no. It always sounds like he’s 13 and his voice is cracking.

While I loved GNR they had some serious issues.

And not just limited to making Chinese Democracy.

Axl today looks like he ate 1987 drugged up Axl several times over.

Wow. Just out of curiosity --- since you identify yourself as a "musician" --- would you care to name someone you consider to be an outstanding musician?

I think you're missing his point entirely. His argument is that people's ratings of musicians are less based on their competency playing an instrument and more on their ability to write, arrange, record, and perform music. He's saying that despite Prince's legendary virtuosity, his catalog of actual recorded works leave much to be desired relative to his pop culture status.

I mean, Purple Rain is awesome, but it's pretty formulaic and not unlike many epic ballads of its time. When Doves Cry isn't very interesting or entertaining. Let's Get Crazy is just a fun track, that I can't deny.

I definitely can see both sides of the "Price is/isn't overrated argument.

They made their entire career of off old, dead, black bluesmen.
