RIP.
I have been to his concerts. He was one of the regulars at Jazz Fest.

I vacationed in Key West this past April. Our favorite restaurant was Louie’s Backyard. Jimmy Buffet used to live next door and it was his favorite too. Delicious food and great ambiance with outdoor seating and a waterfront bar.

Buffett gave the restaurant a shoutout in “Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season “
When that song is played at the bar, the crowd sings along and gives a big cheer when Buffett sings:

Sure could use a Bloody Mary
So I stumbled over to Louie’s Backyard.

He was much loved over there.

He was born on Christmas Day 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He began playing guitar during his first year at Auburn University before continuing his college years at Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1969.
he played a show at the AU Coliseum while I was in school in the early 80s, wearing an Auburn tshirt.

He said “its good to be back on campus, last time I was here I was flunking out - that’ll happen when you your GPA for the quarter is buckshot”

My favorite recording of his wasn’t one he wrote - its a cover of a song by Keith Sykes: Coast of Marseilles

I have a 30+ song playlist of Jimmy consisting of songs that most non Jimmy fans will likey never hear. Great songs buried on albums and they don't get the love that they deserve. I named the playlist "Songs You Don't Know By Heart"

Here are a few of my favs that you likely wouldn't have heard at a concert or on a greatest hits album.

West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown
Lone Palm
In the Shelter
Banana Republics
Woman Going Crazy On Caroline Street

What I listened to first today:

Tin Cup Chalice
Son of a Son of a Sailor
One Particular Harbor
He Went To Paris
Changes, et al

We stayed in a B&B on Caroline Street in KW. Chose it because of this song.

I had a t-shirt in the 90’s with this song on it. It’s definitely a favorite. It was a sad day when that shirt finally wore out.

Island
Lovely Cruise
The Night They Painted The Sky (that’s a deep cut)
Bama Breeze is one of my favorite recent songs.

ETA: Nautical Wheelers just came on Radio Margaritaville. One of the greats

To a certain extent, I fell like my wife and I molded our lives in a Buffett way. Have been for 25 years. Dont regret it one bit

In the Shelter

Such a great song. What I love about it is how in the original recording (High Cumberland Jubilee?) the lyric has the woman about to commit suicide - "Sits on the big gray rocks, takes off her boots and socks, and knowing now what comes next she starts to cry."

Then when it gets rerecorded on Changes in Latitudes he gives her a little hope - "Sits on the big gray rocks, takes off her boots and socks, not knowing what comes next she starts to cry."

For what it’s worth, TMZ which usually has pretty good sources about such things says the skin cancer he’d had for a while progressed to lymphoma and that’s what got him. He’d been in hospice for about a week and one of his last visitors, came by to sing for him and his family, was Sir J. Paul McCartney, MBE.

Props to Macca for doing that …

Never really a person I'd listen to regularly unless we were on the boat or at the beach. But a few years back, when my wife started working at a music venue, we went just to enjoy a fun show. After that, we went every time he came through. Just a great show, great crowd, and a sneaky catalog of music where you don't even realize how many songs you can sing along to. Just one after another. Will be missed.

RIP. If the phone doesn’t ring, it’s him.

Migration
quote:

Whoa, lookin' back at my background
Tryin' to figure out how I ever got here
Some things are still a mystery to me
While others are much too clear
I'm just livin' in the sunshine
Stay contented most of the time
Yeah listenin' to Murphy, Walker, and Willis
Sing me their Texas rhymes

Fins
quote:

She came down from Cincinatti
It took her three days on a train
Looking for some peace and quiet
Hoped to see the sun again
But now, she lives down by the ocean
She's taking care to look for sharks
They hang out in the local bars
And they feed right after dark

The Wino and I Know

Makes sense he died from skin cancer. All of that time he spent on the deck of a boat back in the 1970s when no one had ever heard of sunscreen.

Fruitcakes is a pretty underrated album of his…quietly making noise, uncle John’s band ( Grateful Dead cover), Frenchman for the night, six string music..all really good songs
