They were a laughing stock to any serious music fan back then. It's hilarious you kids think they were some towering figure. They were pop garbage.

This is verifiably false.

Hall & Oates detractors here should think of the matter this way: Pop music undeniably reached its crescendo in the 1980s and in that decade, no two men wrote more hits than Daryl Hall and John Oates. It's as simple as that.

Listen to the sax solo on "Maneater." The call-and-response echo effect. That bassline. The faint sounds of the night that are sprinkled throughout the song... These men were artists in every sense of the word.

So what you're saying is Ce Lo improves on the original. And it still is fluff pop.

How did Fripp make money on an album with Hall that never came out?

They didn't know when they were making it that the label wouldn't release it. Fripp thought with Hall's star power he could get some of his avant-garde stuff into the mainstream. And of course Hall thought it would give him some cred as a serious musician.

Wow..I never thought I would read pissing match thread that was centered around Fripp, Hall and Oates.

That being said, sometimes you just shut your eyes, listen carefully and decide on an individual basis whether or not you like the sound produced by the creators.

Lol. Fripp never gave a shite about mainstream airplay, stop making shite up. The three records he made at that time, his own, Daryl's and one with Peter Gabriel, were pop records. There's nothing avante-garde about them.

By the time Hall and Fripp worked together, Hall & Oates already had released eight records, five went gold and one platinum. He already had plenty of cred as a serious musician.

No, I'm saying that live jam is filthy, and if you would listen to it with an open mind instead of trying to be a pretentious douche, it might open you up to other avenues of music youve closed your mind to.

There is value in every genre of music. There is also a lot of crap in every genre of music. Myself personally? Id say my favorite bands are Primus, Allman Brothers, 311, Queens of the Stone Age and The Doors. I also like Hall and Oates. I also like Frank Zappa. Being a musician means being open to liking all manner of stuff. Doesnt mean you have to like everything. Sure, a lot of pop music is contrived shite. No one said you have to like Hall and Oates. But you act like theyre a bunch of no talent hack arse clowns. No one who actually knows what theyre talking about is going to take you or your opinions seriously.

Then you haven't listened to them. You're going to tell me Fripp's main song contributions to Sacred Songs, "Urban Landscapes" and "NYCNY" are pop?

I said they are pop fluff. I never said they had no talent. Just like Taylor Swift, her stuff is pop fluff but the girl has talent.

I'm not telling you that, Robert Fripp is. From Melody Maker via Wikipedia:

quote:

Fripp's aim with the trilogy "was to investigate the 'pop song' as a means of expression. I think it's an incredibly good way of putting forward ideas. I think it's a supreme discipline to know that you have three to four minutes to get together all your lost emotions and find words of one syllable or less to put forward all your ideas. It's a discipline of form that I don't think is cheap or shoddy".

And yes, NYCNY is definitely a pop song. It has punk, prog and new age influences but still a pop song.

Daryl Hall with Minus the Bear- NYCNY

The actual definition of the term "pop" encompasses a lot of different sounds. The songs Hall did with Fripp are certainly not the fluff pop Hall & Oates usually put out. And Fripp's own songs he brought to the sessions vary from Avante-garde to a more Glam rock sound like he was doing with Bowie in that period. Listen to the songs.

Same here.

Hall and Oates had as good of a run in the first half of the 80s as anyone had...and that the part of the decade that was infested with albums that sold 5+ million units.
